Summary

An elderly lady loses her money on an investment; a conjuror is pursued by thugs; and a clairvoyant mentions the name of the richest man in Europe and his mysterious company. Seemingly unconnected events set Sally Lockhart on the trail of an evil far more awful than she could ever imagine.

This thriller, by the author of The Ruby in the Smoke, evokes its 19th century setting and at the same time remains remarkably contemporary in the originality of its plot and larger-than-life characters. An unabridged reading of Philip Pullman's nerve-shattering thriller.

Brilliant series

Would you listen to The Shadow in the North again? Why?

Yes, I read the books as a teenager and returned to the audiobooks recently. The books are connected but work on their own too. Sally's character is brilliant, what a wonderful strong character she was to grow up with. I love Pullman's attention to detail, it keeps the stories rich time after time.

What about Anton Lesser’s performance did you like?

He is a very accomplished actor and performed with skill and subtlety.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I always do both when I listen to these.

Brilliant

I so nearly gave this book a miss because I read a review giving away the story. I am so glad I did finally buy it.
The characters are so wonderfully portrayed and the plotting and scheming are excellent. This is quite a complicated novel, but really worth reading. Anton Lesser is superb in his narration. I am quite overwhelmed by this book.

Thriller of the deepest intrigue.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Intriguing detective story bringing, mystery, laughter, love, tragedy, clarvoyancy, evil versus good.
Gives an insite into the restrictions women had at the turn of the century.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sally Lockhart shrugged off the shackles that society inflicted on her and forged ahead with what she wanted out of life, with her faithful dog by her side.

What about Anton Lesser’s performance did you like?

Anton Lesser is fantastic as the narrator. I felt as if i was listening to a radio play. He made each character come alive that sometimes i questioned if it was only one man Narrating this story. I would certainly look out for anything else he has narrated.

Another Fine Story

Another fine story in the series which I enjoyed. Frankly carried by the superb talent that is Anton Lesser whose characters are believable and mesmerising. You don't notice any accent changes they are so well done that it is addictive listening. A great listen all round.

Great series - easy listening

Anton lesser brings all the characters to life, his range of accents , male, female made me forget there was only one narrator. Really enjoy this series by Philip Pullman.

Suspensful

A dark and very fast-paced thriller, this book will have the listener gripped from start to finish. Capturing the feel of Victorian London, and the harsh atmosphere of it's underworld. Narrated in fine style by Anton Lesser.

NARRATOR DID THE BEST HE COULD

What would have made The Shadow in the North better?

A more complicated text and plot.

Would you ever listen to anything by Philip Pullman again?

No.

Have you listened to any of Anton Lesser’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Anton Lesser is a brilliant narrator, which is why I downloaded Phillip Pullman's trilogy. However enticing the narrator the substance of the book was poor.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Shadow in the North?

This book and series was not for me. Was it written for a teenage audience?

Any additional comments?

I struggled to listen to the first in the series, and unfortunately thought downloading the next two would be a good idea. However long I persevered (I love the narrator) these books could not keep my attention. I assume they were written for a much younger, teenage, reader. The quality of writing was juvenile! I wish more than two reviews had picked this up and warned me of the quality of writing.

As good as Book 1

I strongly advise you to read Book 1, The ruby in the smoke, first. This sequel will not disappoint you; it's a different story, but just as good. Sally, Jim and Fred are 6 years older, and their relationships and character development are intriguing. Some new characters are also fascinating. As for the story, it's brilliantly written with not a dull moment. Don't be fooled by Audible's blurb; Anton Lesser reads this book too. He could make a shopping list sound interesting, but this is no shopping list.
