Summary

From the national best-selling author - the new novel set in the "darkly fascinating world" (SF Site) of the Black Jewels.

Dena Nehele is a land decimated by its past. Once it was ruled by corrupt Queens who were wiped out when the land was cleansed of tainted Blood. Now, only 100 Warlord Princes stand - without a leader and without hope.

Theran Grayhaven is the last of his line, desperate to find the key that reveals a treasure great enough to restore Dena Nehele. But first he needs to find a Queen who remembers the Blood's code of honor and lives by the Old Ways. The woman chosen to rule Dena Nehele, Lady Cassidy, is not beautiful and believes she is not strong. But she may be the only one able to convince bitter men to serve once again.

Anne Bishop's stories are always fantastic

I confess I already own a complete set of all Anne Bishop's books in print. So I'm biased I think they are all fabulous.

Where are ALL Ann Bishop's books? I have read them all, now I need to hear them. Just off for the next one I can find!

Same great story, but character voices off

Why is Jaenelle Celtic? The voices should stay consistent throughout the series. I love Sharian's Daemon, Lucivar and Saetan.

Another great book

Love the storyline. Love that we see a different character's story, but still incorporate a healthy dose of Jaenelle and Daemon. Still annoyed at the change in voice for Jaenelle... it doesn't suit her imo

The Shadow Queen

Anne Bishop's Black Jewels novels are some of my favorites. I can "hear" character voices as I read from the descriptions she has provided for the individuals. Which is probably why I was disappointed in John Sharian's performance of voices and accents. In all my reading of these books I never imagined a skewed irish-type accent for anyone.

Accent changed?

I loved his the narrator did the voices in the other books of the series, but I don’t understand the choice to change Janelle’s dialect to have an Irish lilt, when that was never present before this book...I’m not sure it was totally the narrator’s choice, but it bothered me the whole time. It also seemed like the narrator had more of an overall flat voice for this story, like he wasn’t as into it. It felt more like someone was reading aloud in class than being told a story by a professional—which is usually the caliber that John Sharian performs. Maybe this had more to do with the director than the narrator, but it really made it a rough listen in comparison with his other work in this same series.

First time

This is my first time listening to a book. I have every book in the Black Jewels series. I read them so often that I've had to constantly buy the books again and again due to wear and tears. I enjoyed being able to still experience the book while doing laundry and cleaning house. a much better experience than listening to music.

Please change Janelle’s voice back!

Not only is the change in accents from previous books different and strange, the tone is very off-putting. I cringe every time. Otherwise good series and performance of other than the main one.

Narration was HORRIBLE

I own this book and have read it may times. The narrator was absolutely horrible. The voices he used did not fit the characters. If you enjoy Anne Bishop books like I do NOT listen to this version.

Great book

The storyline is fabulous as with all of the books by Anne Bishop. What is disappointing is that Janelle’s accent was that Morgan. She has a Scottish accent which was hard for me as this is a first listen of this book. I have probably listened to dark jewel trilogy 10+ times. The narrator did a good job otherwise.

Still important to story line

While the narrator still makes me mad with his new accent for Jaenelle, you still need this story to get the details of the Diablo family. It’s a small stepping stone in the family’s story but still reveals a lot about them.

I love these books and the narrators... usually

These books are challenging with all of the diverse chars and personalities. I was unfortunately extremely distracted with the awful Irish accent used for Janelle’s dialogue. Otherwise well done. The choices in Shalador’s lady were much more on point.
