Summary

This audiobook clarifies what self-love actually is and how can we learn this emotional skill.

We often hear the phrases 'self-love', 'self-care' and that 'you need to love yourself to be happy and to love others'. However, many of us don’t know what this means or how to love ourselves. In an era of selfies, rampant social media use and the culture of comparison, it is easy to confuse vanity for self-love. Many people struggle to present the perfect versions of themselves to the world and hide their shadowy, darker sides living in fear that they will be exposed.

In her second title, Fiona Brennan brings the listener on a practical journey to create ‘The Love Habit’ that will improve their ability to take care of themselves and to create happy relationships with the people they love and their wider community.

Critic reviews

"[F]or someone like me who'd hit a rocky patch and was struggling, this programme was just what I needed. Non-judgemental, full of common sense and practical advice, it forces you to examine yourself and see how you can truly help yourself." (Vicki Notaro, Irish Independent)

"A self-help programme that works while you snooze and in fact sends you into a deeper sleep, happy days!... I could feel the benefits after one week. I felt a general sense of calm and wellbeing that I cannot remember experiencing before, having lived with depression since my early teens." (Michelle McDonagh, Irish Times)

I have the hard copy and listened along in parts

The speed of the audio felt wrong, I had to speed it up to 1.3 to make it be tolerable. Not sure what was going wrong there. But the content of this book is really good! A lot of what Fiona Suggests really ties in with what I have been hearing from my therapist so it was just good to reinforce the new habits I'm getting in to. It's such a new habit for me, to be as kind to myself as I am to others. I did the exercises. I wrote a letter to myself at 8 years old. It didn't make me cry but it did make me feel sad, but it was also strangely helpful. I am really determined to be kind to myself now. That eight year old deserved nothing but kindness, she deserved to be heard and I'm going to do it for the integrated parts of her and me. I used to think self-care meant wine and crisps, but now I am on a better track. I'm doing yoga, but not SEVEN times a week and if I don't manage it, I won't chastise myself. I have to listen to the energise section at the end of the book. I feel scared of that. Like, if I listen to energise and stay in the same unenergised place, well, nothing! I'll just have to be patient with myself. I've talked myself in to listening to it now.
