A delight for kids and adults
This is the first book I listened to by Eva Ibbotson, I loved the story, laughed out loud many times which is always a good sign. I did wish it was longer but it is a kids book. I read a sequel is due 2019, although written by someone else as sadly Eva died in 2010.
I loved the narration by Angela Thorne, She has such an animated voice, which brought life to the story.
I’m 34 and love Children’s story’s, I missed Harry Potter was read somewhere that this was what inspired it. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know. I had read that there were similarities so I had to listen... Yes there are similarities such as a character called Lily, the two main boy characters could be compared to Harry and Dudley as one is nice and the other is a brat, also the ’gump’ (doorway between two lands) is located at platform 13 in kings cross station. But that’s it really. You need to separate them and not compare them to each other and just enjoy the story.

Light, funny, magical listen.
This is a wonderfully entertaining story. The narrator does an excellent job bringing out the humor and magic of the characters and story without being too childish. The plot is somewhat predictable, but filled with so many imaginative, warm, odd, and funny moments it does not seem to matter. If you enjoy Roald Dahl, you may want to try it. This is a light and simple tale worth the listen!
