Summary

Mary Lennox, a spoiled, ill-tempered, and unhealthy child, comes to live with her reclusive uncle in Misselthwaite Manor after the death of her parents. There, she meets a hearty housekeeper and her spirited brother, a dour gardener, a cheerful robin, and her willful, hysterical, and sickly cousin, Master Colin.

With the help of the robin, Mary finds the door to a secret garden, neglected and hidden for years. When she decides to restore the garden in secret, the story becomes a charming journey into the places of the heart, where faith restores health, flowers refresh the spirit, and the magic of the garden, coming to life anew, brings health to Colin - and to Mary, happiness.

Critic reviews

"It will rapt most children away, for after fifty years, its spell is still as strong; a blend of power, beauty, vivid interest and honest goodness. Yes, if this is magic, it is good magic." ( New York Times Book Review)

Having never read this as a child it's been on my TBR for a while. Johanna Ward's narration is excellent. She really brings Mary in particular to life. Highly recommended.

Would you listen to The Secret Garden again? Why?

Yes, it was as great a listen as I remembered it being a great read many years ago. I remember reading the book as a child and not being able to put it down until I had finished it. I wondered if it would still be the same for me now. It was!!!!!!!!!! how great. It took me straight back to my childhood, and it was wonderful. I had to keep listening to the very end.

As great as I remembered!!

A wonderful story, narrated beautifully. The character came alive with the skills of the narrator and I could almost smell the flowers of the secret garden. Highly recommend.

Simply Brilliant

I read this many years ago and loved it then but I have to say I had huge holes of memory! Read so beautifully I was swept away and yes, although I was painting as I listened towards the end, I had teardrops clinging to my lashes several times. Seriously worth having. Highly recommend this to you whatever your age or sex.
