Summary

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first publication of Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole, Penguin Audiobooks are re-releasing the audiobook edition of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 in downloadable audio. This classic of comic fiction is hilariously read by Stephen Mangan, who played Adrian Mole in the The Cappuccino Years and also starred in The Green Wing as the hapless Guy Secretan.

Friday January 2nd: I felt rotten today. It's my mother's fault for singing 'My Way' at two o'clock in the morning at the top of the stairs. Just my luck to have a mother like her. There is a chance my parents could be alcoholics. Next year I could be in a children's home.

Meet Adrian Mole, a hapless teenager providing an unabashed, pimples-and-all glimpse into adolescent life. Writing candidly about his parents' marital troubles, the dog, his life as a tortured poet and 'misunderstood intellectual', Adrian's painfully honest diary is still hilarious and compelling reading 30 years after it first appeared.

"One of literature's most endearing figures. Mole is an excellent guide for all of us." ( Observer)
"Marvellous, touching and screamingly funny . . . set to become as much a cult book as The Catcher in the Rye." (Jilly Cooper)
"A satire of our times. Very funny indeed." ( Sunday Times)

Simply wonderful

No one captures the voice of Adrian quite like Stephen Mangan. My only sorrow is that this is so abridged. I would love the complete works read by Stephen, please Audible!

Entertaining

Entertaining book with good narration. I had read this book many years ago, but it was fun listening to the audio version.

Perfect

I really enjoyed it. I thought it was witty and insightful. A parent should read it before giving it to a their kid just to check that he/she is ok with the content at some sensitive points (the way they are told is brilliant but still depending on the age and culture of the kid one may want to avoid exposure)

Unabridged vs Abridged

Why does the unabridged book have a different narrator? A good book but most of the funny lines(e.g the blue felt tip pen) have gone! Just my luck...

Not the full story...

As an everlong fan of Sue Townsends wonderful writing and the brilliant Adrian Mole diaries, I was pleased to have the audio book. The narrator does a great job and leads the story well. My frustration and disappointment with this audio book though, is it has missed so much out. I did not realise with it being an anniversary edition this would be the case, and should have been stated clearly by audible. It really lacks the rest of the warmth and humour with the missing passages. I did still enjoy it, but as I know the book so well I could tell obviously were the missing passages had been left out.

Happy Anniversary Adrian Mole !!

I've been in love with and a huge fan of the Sue Townsend's "Adrian Mole" series since Adrian was first introduced to us 30 years ago as a young 13 and 3/4 teenage boy. I have every volume in the Secret Diary series both as books and in audio format, so when this special 30th anniversary edition was released I simply had to purchase and download it straight away. I was not disappointed, the Forward by David Walliams is hilarious, lots of additional exclusive additional material throughout not in the original volume this one is a must have for any die hard Adrian fan. If you havent experienced Adrian Mole before, what are you waiting for ? and if like me you've already read every volume and know the stories practically off by heart, you wont be disappointed with this one that takes you right back to your youth.

I've even started my own 11 and 13 year old daughters off listening to this and they love it and laughed just as much as I did listening to the audio. Should come with a warning with the download though "Listen in private" as you seriously will be laughing out loud through quite a bit of the book, Stephen Mangan does a fantastic job of bringing Adrian and supporting cast to life.

Happy Anniversary Adrian Mole and thank you for being here for the past 30 years, here's to another 30 !
