Summary

The brand-new crime novel from Katerina Diamond.

Can you keep a secret? Your life depends on it....

Bridget Reid has a secret - one that could get her killed...if she can escape the man who is keeping her locked in a basement bedroom.

DS Imogen Grey is good at keeping secrets - truths she'd never reveal to her colleagues at Exeter Police. She worked hard to get where she is. She nearly died for it. Now her past is catching up with her.

As DS Grey and her partner, DS Adrian Miles, search for Bridget, they uncover a terrifying web of abuse, betrayal and murder. And they realise that some secrets are better left buried.

so far, perry awful....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

a better plot with a lot more thought about what might actually happen in the real world/ a little more thought around motivation and credibility

What was most disappointing about Katerina Diamond’s story?

immediately recognisable as just another very dull pot boiler/use of casual brutality to assault the reader/ a kind of frankenstein monster approach stitching together whatever comes to hand to create a crude approximation to a thriller.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator did what could be done with the material

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

not really

Any additional comments?

stock stuff and totally forgettable

much better than before

a much better story than the first one and much less confusing, especially with all those flashbacks.

Different but as gripping as the first

A great story and like the first in the series it extremely well told. As the book went on I began to question the characters as they seemed to change from the last book. Imogen Grey seems to lose some of her strength and grit to the point you start to ask yourself if she is the same character. As the book goes on you have to suspend disbelief and accept the number of coincidences including the cliffhanger at the end!
Worth a read! :)

Fast paced Edgy Thriller

The story a follow on from The Teacher, operates on two primary timelines; 2 years ago describing what happened to Imogen in Plymouth causing her move to Exeter, and a present day case with definite links to the Plymouth case. A well constructed story that starts with multiple fragments which like a jigsaw puzzle gradually link up to create the complete picture.

It is however a very dark book, black in places that may not be to everyone’s taste! Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the book I have marked the story down a star for two reasons. Firstly there are just far too many coincidences giving story a slightly implausible feel, and secondly because one or two of the violent scenes, in particular the country house hunt, in my opinion added nothing to the plot and were unnecessary
.
Stevie Lacey does a great job with the narration, with extremely good characterisations. She must be getting well used to the West Country burr given that she also narrates the Charlotte Savage series. Overall I recommend the book and look forward to Katerina Diamond’s next offering.

Going nowhere fast

No matter what, I just couldn't get into this book. I felt it was very disjointed and far fetched. Waste of time and money unfortunately

Keep going

It took a little while to get into the book and then when I was enthralled the ending arrived and completely threw me! It ended too soon in my opinion!

Brilliant!!!!

A fantastic follow on from the first book' The Teacher '( my favourite book ever ) gritty, gory, well written and narrated. Can't wait for the next instalment.
