Summary

Explore how the Second World War began, the aftermath, and the events in between, while also getting an in-depth look into the extraordinary military operation called D-Day.

Two captivating manuscripts in one audiobook:

  • World War 2: A Captivating Guide from Beginning to End
  • D-Day: A Captivating Guide to the Battle for Normandy

The Second World War was one of the most traumatic events in human history. Across the world, existing conflicts became connected, entangling nations in a vast web of violence. It was fought on land, sea, and air, touching every inhabited continent. Over 55 million people died, some of them combatants, some civilians caught up in the violence, and some murdered by their own governments.

It was the war that unleashed the Holocaust and the atomic bomb upon the world. But it was also a war that featured acts of courage and self-sacrifice on every side.

D-Day, the Allied invasion of German-held Normandy, was one of the most extraordinary achievements not only of the Second World War but in the whole of military history. Millions of Allied personnel were involved in launching the greatest sea-borne invasion ever undertaken. Incredible acts of cunning and of courage ensured success in an operation that changed the face of the war, opening a vast new front. It led to the liberation of France and the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Why was this extraordinary operation launched? How was it done? And what happened in the aftermath? Listen to this audiobook now to learn more about World War 2 and D-Day!

Made My Day

Any additional comments?

The author has a knack for stitching a well done history piece around the oral histories of the actual combatants so that the reader has a sense of immensity of the action taken across Normandy that day. A memorable book.

Excellent summary of WW2 and DDay

Excellent listen. Although cramming alot into the 4 hours, it felt very informative and covered so much of what was such a massive event in human history.

Any additional comments?

This was a famous historical book. It had all of the dates, political deal, details, and historical links that I love. At times it holds like a textbook and I’m so in love with the history that this was an excellent collegiate book. I loved it.

One of the best books I have to listen to WW2. A lot of important detail. I especially like the way the writer ties all the battles together describing the influence of each of the others. Excellent book.

Really good guide

As a first-person insight into the WWII, I got it exactly what I always desired to know about the subject. Deep, and especially enlightening not only in the military and political facts but also in the human side of the struggle. Brilliant book.

I have liked the book immensely! The writer explains in great detail the battles, the high politics, and the ordinary human condition, while constantly keeping the high-level story moving forward. Would probably understand it again in the future.

One of the best

After studying probably 100 books about WWII this is one of the best. True, it's an overview and hence can't concentrate on everything. It has good coverage of areas that we in the US don't normally hear about; the Eastern front and the Burma campaign. I strongly recommend this book, it's well written, well documented and even-handed.

Very Well Written

This is a well written and detailed account of the events of June 6, 1944. Between the personal anecdotes from the soldiers and the overall picture presented, I felt that I really got a good picture of the magnitude and history of that day.

Now, I know what happened actually

A great blow by blow account including the huge amount of planning and preparation involved. A compilation of historical recount and direct observation from many interviews. Those direct observations made it very personal and all the more compelling. The author doesn't pull any punches on the mistakes in planning and execution by all those involved.

Great detail.

The book itself is excellent in most aspects though. It was a unique and mostly interesting approach to look at each day of the war and see the events unfold before us in a day-by-day, blow-by-blow approach.

War history is my favorite topic, I love this book

Exceptional assumptions and very listenable and unique satisfied on WW2. Perhaps not the book you want to start reading if you know nothing about WW2, but for those with a decent sympathetic looking for somewhat new, this is a no-brainer.

A fascinating listening.

This not seems a conservative history of the Second World War, this captivating book is a study of numerous feature of the war: ideas, air power, marine power, etc. - all experiential and studied in a non-linear, non-chronological paper fashion.

A book of surprised, a historian.

In our age of deliberate unawareness and ancient forgetfulness, author's assistances to our society feast far outside the estate. Fine work from a brave leader in the field of military history.
