Two captivating manuscripts in one audiobook:

  • World War 2: A Captivating Guide from Beginning to End
  • D-Day: A Captivating Guide to the Battle for Normandy

The Second World War was one of the most traumatic events in human history. Across the world, existing conflicts became connected, entangling nations in a vast web of violence. It was fought on land, sea, and air, touching every inhabited continent. Over 55 million people died, some of them combatants, some civilians caught up in the violence, and some murdered by their own governments.

It was the war that unleashed the Holocaust and the atomic bomb upon the world. But it was also a war that featured acts of courage and self-sacrifice on every side.

D-Day, the Allied invasion of German-held Normandy, was one of the most extraordinary achievements not only of the Second World War but in the whole of military history. Millions of Allied personnel were involved in launching the greatest sea-borne invasion ever undertaken. Incredible acts of cunning and of courage ensured success in an operation that changed the face of the war, opening a vast new front. It led to the liberation of France and the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Why was this extraordinary operation launched? How was it done? And what happened in the aftermath? Listen to this audiobook now to learn more about World War 2 and D-Day!

ridiculously short

33 chapters, averaging about 7 minutes each. Ridiculous for a topic of this magnitude. You'd get more detail -- and better research -- reading give pages on Wikipedia. Look elsewhere.

No throne historian of WW2

Any additional comments?

No throne historian of WW2 should be out this book. I heard so much about the range and depth of this war that I didn't know despite a lifelong pursuit of it as a hobby. I also admire the style of writing for smooth flow

Made My Day

Any additional comments?

The author has a knack for stitching a well done history piece around the oral histories of the actual combatants so that the reader has a sense of immensity of the action taken across Normandy that day. A memorable book.

The depth of the descriptions of the preparations for and the execution of the invasion are the best I've listen to. As always, author’s style is very easy to understand and hard to put down.

Very Well Written

This is a well written and detailed account of the events of June 6, 1944. Between the personal anecdotes from the soldiers and the overall picture presented, I felt that I really got a good picture of the magnitude and history of that day.

Now, I know what happened actually

A great blow by blow account including the huge amount of planning and preparation involved. A compilation of historical recount and direct observation from many interviews. Those direct observations made it very personal and all the more compelling. The author doesn't pull any punches on the mistakes in planning and execution by all those involved.

Good, comprehensive, a little too quickly read.

Good review, comprehensive, well researched. Slow down the audio to .5, and you will be fine.

Great detail.

The book itself is excellent in most aspects though. It was a unique and mostly interesting approach to look at each day of the war and see the events unfold before us in a day-by-day, blow-by-blow approach.

The series is exceptional. The account of events leading to and during WWII is well written with many interesting details. Original source documents add depth to many of the popular notions about the war.

War history is my favorite topic, I love this book

Exceptional assumptions and very listenable and unique satisfied on WW2. Perhaps not the book you want to start reading if you know nothing about WW2, but for those with a decent sympathetic looking for somewhat new, this is a no-brainer.

he definitive history

The book is largely chronological in it order. It covers all the great events of the tragic conflict that was World War II. Yet, at the same time, it also presents numerous vignettes that bring the war down to the personal level. My favorite in this respect was the story of Yang Kyoungjong who we meet at the start and end of the book.
