Summary

A brand-new, unabridged recording of Baroness Orczy's classic tale of adventure, read by Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Paris, 1792. The Terror has begun. Every day, scores of the French nobility are delivered to the guillotine. Trapped in the capital, they have no way of escape.

But rumours abound of a league of young English gentlemen who are risking their lives to spirit French aristocrats away to safety across the Channel. Led by a man known only as the 'Scarlet Pimpernel', they leave no trace behind them save a single note.

Determined to stop them, ruthless spymaster Chauvelin travels to England and embarks on a quest to uncover the identity of their leader, forcing the Scarlet Pimpernel and his men to summon all their courage and wits to evade capture and stay alive.

Critic reviews

"Julian Rhind-Tutt sounds as if he's having as much excitement as the Scarlet Pimpernel in this classic adventure novel, which means that listeners do, too.... Rhind-Tutt offers expansive vocal studies of the central figures and quick sketches of the passersby. His voice is melodious, and his pacing suits the tempo of the scene, be it love or chase." Brilliant…but Dover in Devon??

The narrator is great and really brings the story to life! Even if he does seem to believe that Dover is in Devon, judging by the accents in chapter 2 😆

Good, smushy escapism

The Mills and Boon book of it's time, but it has a charm of its own. It's a classic.

Excellent rendition of this Classic

I have had several versions of this favourite in my WIsh List for years, but never really liked the audio sample narration.

I saw this recently, was not familiar with the narrator but felt he would be the 'right' voice. I was not disappointed - what an excellent job he did. So if you are familiar with this novel by Baroness Orczy, you'll love this narration.

Saved by the narrator!

A creaking plot with many overblown and dubious passages but nevertheless the intelligent, brisk narration of Julian Rhind-Tutt carries the story along in compelling fashion and makes it a fun listening experience, though not one I would want to listen to again.

Loved it.

A ‘good fun’ novel that more than lived up to expectations as I had seen dramatisations of this before listening to the original story. It was very well performed and Julian Rhind Tutt was perfect at doing the different voices and adding drama. By the nature of listening to it rather than reading it, I was inclined at times to think about the Pimpernel episode of Blackadder and that added to my enjoyment of it.
