THE CLASSIC THRILLER FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF REBECCA
'He turned and stared at me and I at him, and I realised, with a strange sense of shock and fear and nausea all combined, that his face and voice were known to me too well. I was looking at myself.'
By chance, two men - one English, the other French - meet in a provincial railway station. Their resemblance is uncanny, and they spend the evening talking and drinking. It is not until John wakes the next morning that he realises his French companion has stolen his identity and disappeared. So John steps into the Frenchman's shoes, and faces a variety of perplexing roles - as owner of a chateau, director of a failing business, head of a fractious family, and master of nothing.

This was chosen for our book club. From the beginning it was a page turner. Beautifully written.

A cleaver thriller.

Gripping storyline by master (mistress?) of suspense, Daphne Du Maurier. I found the first twist in the story a little trite, but please bear with it. The story will soon become gripping. The narrator did an excellent job and only just managed to stay on the right side of « Monsieur le Comte ». Having finished the book, I will now go back to listen to the preface, which doesn’t make much sense until you’ve listened to the whole story.

Liked it all, great reader? No mispronunciation that I heard . No dislikes. It was unusual which is another like!

Great story, interesting plot,

My favourite Daphne du Maurier wonderfully narrated by the multi-talented Johnny Flynn. If you don’t know the book, the first chapter may seem fairly boring, but bear with it as then the storyline just flies. A film or tv adaptation with Johnny as John/Jean would be a dream. One can hope!

Just perfect
