Summary

Once there was a girl who loved saffron. She loved its secrets and its mystery, and best of all she loved its hint of magic.

After the death of her beloved mother, Nell travels from rural Cornwall to the colour and chaos of Marrakech. Her marriage may be on the rocks, but exploring the heady delights of Moroccan cuisine could help her fulfil her dream of opening her own restaurant.

It's there she meets Amy - a young photographer trying to unravel the story behind her family's involvement in the Vietnam War. The two women develop a close friendship and discover a surprising connection between their own pasts.

Lovely Story

I have never read anything by this author but I will in the future.
The descriptions in the story make you feel like you are there and the shift in the story between the past and present was well handled.
Well worth a read

Great Locations

The outcome of the various threads of the story may be predictable but the journey to reach them is a good one. I love the way Rosanna Ley weaves the storylines with well researched histories, locations and plenty of the details that have you right there seeing it all in your minds eye.
I've enjoyed all the books of Ms Ley that I've listened to.
Nicely read too.

Lovely ....

story with some lovely characters and the very descriptive parts throughout the book with quite a lot of details in it. The narrator was very good.

Relaxing

This book is by an author I didn't know and not my usual type of book.
However I have had a hard week and just taking myself every now and again to listen to this story was lovely. Very relaxing and a true escape.
My one complaint was the person reading it's American accent, I thought about it instead of the story every time she read it. However other than this it was read well.

Glorious Tale of Cornwall & Marrakesh

I liked the paperback and I just loved re-experiencing this book in audio form.

A glorious tale which spans three eras - WWII, 1970s and 2014 onwards, this book has love, adventure, beautiful Cornwall, mysterious Marrakesh, tarot, artistic talent, great research and a little bit of gentle sex.

Superb.

loved it

Another gem from Rosanna Ley.. Accents in the 70's back story a bit irritating, but a didn't really distract from a lovely story..

Holiday listen

Well-written with a good sense of place but some whopping coincidences made this slightly unbelievable. The switches between past and present were well-handled and the narration kept me going through the slower parts. Enjoyable but not outstanding holiday romance.

BEAUTIFULLY WOVEN STORY

Loved the way Then and Now Stories came together. How the chance meeting of 2 people can become entwined in history so that by chance the next generation meet by a mutual love of Saffron and Morocco! ! I was drawn to the smells and the sounds of Morocco that I have put it on my To Visit List.
The story was compelling and the Narrator had the charecters sounding so realistic you forget it is just one voice.

It made me look up Saffron Crocus online ...

...and I didn't resent the coincidences as much as some reviewers seem to - in those days far less people travelled to fewer places and often stayed in situ for longer as it wasn't the tick the boxes thing that it seems to be now, Covid aside. My only negative was listening to the US, Aussie and Arab being mangled all the way through...
