Summary
Will is small for his age, but agile and energetic. All his life, he has dreamed of becoming a great knight like the father he never knew, so he is devastated when he is rejected as an apprentice to Castle Redmont's Battleschool. Instead he is apprenticed to Halt, the mysterious Ranger whose uncanny ability to move unseen is thought to be the result of black magic. Reluctantly, Will learns to use a Ranger's secret weapons: a bow and arrow, a mottled cloak and a stubborn little pony. It may not be the sword and battlehorse he longs for, but when Will and Halt set out on a desperate mission to prevent the assassination of the King, Will finds that a Ranger's weapons are not so useless after all....

Fantastic, start to finish.
Had a great time with this one from start to finish and thought it warranted my first proper review.
Riveting character growth that bucks some of the trends with these young casts. The pacing is perfect throughout and I feel an attachment to these characters already in a way I never have before.
Looking forward to listening to the rest of the series.

So gave it ago and then ended up buying the second
I had been seeing this book a few times while out and about in charity shops. So when it came on sale on Audible, I thought why not? So gave it ago and then ended up buying the second book and the third book… So yeah.
You see them grow as people as well as skilled traders. Whether it be a cook to a knight in training. You see a range of different trades. It was great to see the message that you don’t have to be a knight to be a warrior. Warriors come in all different sizes and shapes. It’s what’s in the inside that matters.

Great introduction
Whilst this is a young adult book with a few clear messages on team building, bullying etc it is a very good book with some clever parts to it.
I look forward to the next in the series

What this is so good
So just wanted to say that this is amazing it is so good and is like sad and happy. The characters amongst my favorites is tug and holt. Tug is just funny and brave and sometimes even affectionate. Holt is strong and silent and one of the best Rangers I have ever heard about. Then it comes to the bad guys like brin and alder and the other boy that to me is hard to remember also the kalkara. The bully's are just mean mean mean and mean because all they do is make horiss' life hell. Calling him baby and making him believe that they were supposed to do all this and he was supposed to obey them seriously I think that they deserved the beating. The kalkaras are just bad I don't think I should not dwell on it. Though I love this book!

LOVED IT, LOVED IT, LOVED IT!
I think I found my next favourite series! The book had all the ingredients to hook me in: adventure, humour, likeable characters and great villains. It reminded me a little bit of the Assassin's Creed series because the rangers are very secretive and have a certain set of skills that only a selected few can obtain through training. I developed a particular fondness for the old, grizzly ranger. :) The narration is also superb. I will definitely listen to the other books in the series.

Great story, excellently read, but the music is a bit much.
They play a little tune at the start of each chapter. It’s a bit much.
