About this listen

Following on from the child abduction in her previous novel The Pure in Heart, Susan Hill explores the crazy grief of a widowed husband, a derangement that turns to obsession and threats, violence and terror.

You should listen to Susan Hill's brilliant Simon Serrailler trilogy in the correct order which is as follows:

  • Book 1: The Various Haunts of Men
  • Book 2: The Pure in Heart
  • Book 3: The Risk of Darkness

Any additional comments?

This is another great tale in the Simon Serrailler series. It ties up loose ends from the previous one. The main characters in the series are all a bit 'posh' and mostly religious, which is fine. There was a little too much religious worship in this one for me though. Hence, the loss of one star.

Good stuff!

Good solid characters and entertain story. Susan Hill has the balance just right between the different characters.

Darkness just right side of scary

this the third of the series and best so far. The narration from Stephen Pacey continues to entrance and engage. The story is beautifully crafted and akin to Scandinavian fiction deals with the relationships between the characters rather than the linear plot -I hghly recommend this.

a continuation of the cases of DCI Simon Serrailler and the intricate web of relationships with family, friends and work colleagues.

Good to be transported

A human story, dealing with priests in a normal way, the grief the families feel when losing - and the bloodthirst of the press!!! Maybe the outline is concentrated on the middleclass, but the questions in this book is about every human being. Overall a very good thriller, dealing with the devil.

Thrilling and beautiful
