What happened to this series?!

Raul Endymion has to be one of the most irritating characters ever. He’s an Everyman.. born a nomad on a backwater planet, that knows masterpieces of music and literature. Can play Bach like the best of them.

He’s a hunter, soldier, miner, sailor, explosives expert... even suddenly becomes a writer half way through this book when he decides randomly pick up a ‘stylus’ and record a bit of conversation. All clumsily delivered because that’s what the narrative needed at a given time.

Characters are introduced and forgotten about within chapters of their introduction. Facts that’s had been given in the previous books are thrown out (all the dolphin herders are extinct in Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion, but not in this book).

It’s a poor book... with a terrible realised protagonist. Read Hyperion, and Fall of Hyperion and stop there.

Best Sci-fi ever

Seriously, this is like the third time through this series. It is a master work. Amazing

What a let down

I was excited to start the final story in the hyperion saga.

The first three books had created a such a full and rich universe. I couldn't wait to hear the conclusion, learn what the skriek really was and where humanity really found itself.

This anticipation made the disappointment worse. The final instalment drags painfully. The author seems to revel in his ability to make up names from different cultures, and insists on naming each and every character in every room.

I have been forced to stop and re-start this book so many times due to these periods of pointless navel gazing.

maybe on a page these lists could be skipped over with a blink of the eye, but in audio book format its frankly painful.

A real shame to end such a wonderfully spun narative this way.

The best science fiction series now in print

This was an eye-opener! The whole series was exquisitely crafted and sensitively narrated and so good I hope it wins many many awards. The ONLY writer to rival Ian M Banks.

Solid but a little dragging

A good follow up to hyperion, but not as griping in my opinion. Very well performed

Absolutely superb conclusion

This four-book series kept its momentum until the very end and was a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. This is my all-time favourite series of sci-fi books and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Excellent, interesting Sci-fi, beautifully written and read.

Almost great

Hyper hyper hyper hyper average. Oh and it over used the word hyper.

Personally I though the beginning dragged and by the end I didn't really care what happened.

A dissappointing end to the saga. Not terrible, but it felt like it fell short of its potential.

should have left the series alone

Firstly the good. Strong narrator with a good range.

Sadly the series should have stopped after the first two books. Raul was terrible and gave off them Woody Allen vibes if you know what I mean ....

The final book

I think each book in the series was better than the last. This is definitely the best.

Got there in the end

The first book was interesting and moved along well, after that things just .......went on a bit. Really the series should have been a trilogy. So much unwanted and meandering drivel in some passages, I was skipping big chunks. No twists at the end it was all a bit ‘Disney musical’ where they all live happily ever after, and do actually go off into the sunset.
