Summary

Fizzing with her trademark energy, hilarity and charm, Countryfile's Anita Rani reads her incredible first memoir, The Right Sort of Girl.

'I'm a girl and northern and brown, didn't you know? A triple threat!'

Trying to navigate her Indian world at home and the British world outside her front door, Anita Rani was a girl who didn't fit in anywhere. She was always destined to stand out: from playing Mary in her otherwise all white nursery nativity to growing up in eighties Yorkshire with her Punjabi family, spending evenings in the factory her parents owned whilst trying to figure out how best to get rid of hair that seemed to be growing EVERYWHERE.

Anita shares the lessons she wishes her younger self could have known: 'Freedom is Complicated', 'You Will Fall in Love and Be Loved' and, most importantly, 'Your Anger is Legitimate'. How did she manage to become the powerhouse she is, whilst battling against being too white inside her home and too brown outside of it?

This story of a second-generation British Indian woman up north is also a tale of tenacity and a life lived with positivity and humour. If you have ever felt alone, different, or just not the right sort of girl, this is the book for you.

Loved it! Thank you for sharing the journey of a Brown girls, which echoed what most of us have kept hidden away. At 67, I'm still waiting to share mine!!

Riveting and wonderful.

A wonderfully written heartfelt message to us all from the energetic, beautiful (even with short hair!) Anita Rani. I congratulate her on the truthful, often shocking story of her family and childhood, my goodness us ‘whites’ have one hell of a lot to answer to! But I think I knew that. I loved listening to her recounting the various tales she weaves us through, brought even more alive by her voice dropping into Indian accents on many occasions. Oh and by the way is very funny too!

Loved this book 💕

As a 57 year old white woman I decided to listen to this book to expand my understanding of other peoples life experience. I had never seen Anita on TV and didn’t know who she was. I live in the UK but in Northern Ireland and so much of the otherness she spoke about resonated with me. She made me smile, laugh out loud, feel angry at more of life’s injustices and tearful. I will be recommending this to family and friends regardless if age.I loved her voice, honesty and bravery in being vulnerable. Listen to this it will be worth it! Thank you Anita x

Not very interesting, couldn’t finish

Having grown up in and gone to school in the same part of the world I thought I’d enjoy this. I didn’t really recognise it through her eyes. It just didn’t hold my attention and she comes across as needy. Could not finish it (only the third book in my life I couldn’t finish). Not for me.

Liked her before, like her even more!

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Anita Rani’s story and her experiences of growing up. I learned so much about the cultural challenges faced by her and her family and the evidence she presented of casual and planned racism in our society today was quite shocking.
Don’t ever change lass… keep fighting and stay arsey!

For all girls especially

I found this book liberating. I'm not in my forties or fifties or brown but older and felt it spoke to me too. So relevant. A wonderful read, Anita, to now to be bought for my granddaughter.

Brilliant!

Great to hear an audio book that's narrated by the person who has written it.

a little disappointing

Being a similar age and from the same area from the country I was looking forward to listening to Anita's journey so far. While there are plenty of anecdotes and thoughts to smile and muse at, overall the narrative become a little repetitive and almost a bit preachy which unfortunately spoiled the experience of listening before the end.

Definitely the right sort of girl…..

I have enjoyed listening to every second of this book. Anita Rani thank you for sharing your story, some of which I could relate too, especially my home town Rhyl.
