France 1789: a time of terror; a charismatic boy, Yann, who must find out who he is; the daring rescue of Sido, an aristocrat's daughter: these are the elements in this tremendous adventure by a consummate storyteller, a marvellous tale of the first days of the French Revolution.

A nice bedtime read

A gentle story. Each character is brought to life by one man's voice tricks. Enjoy.

Surprised

I was really surprised to love this book. I only picked it because it was Tom Hiddleston narrating it. Yet the story is Fabulous. I love it. Tom does a fantastic job with it. His many voices bring it to life. His enthusiasm made me smile. I have listened to it 4 times already.

Tom Huddleston is brilliant in everyway!!!!!!

The sound of Tom Huddleston 's voice is so dreamy, that you are transported to the actual places and meeting the characters in the book!!!!

Silly but enjoyable yarn

The lovely smooth voice of Tom Hiddleston really elevates this. Enjoyable enough easy listen though somewhat clichéd.

Silken Caress of the Ear

What does Tom Hiddleston bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Tom Hiddleston's narration of this book is perfection. His voice is like a silken caress of the listener's ear. Hiddleston has a gift for voicing a variety of characters, switching between different accents, genders and ages with apparent ease.

Any additional comments?

Whilst this is a children/young adult book, the story is sufficiently interesting and well-written to capture the imagination of the adult listener as well.

Amazing Narration👏🏻

Performed wonderfully by Tom Hiddleston, unfortunately the story wasn’t really for me but the narration made it doable.

Step into history...

This is wonderful!! I'll be honest I bought this purely based upon the fact that the audio version is read by the delectable Tom Hiddleston and boy does he make it entertaining! His wonderful and varied accents breathe such life into the characters.
The story itself is beautifully written, not knowing a great deal about the French revolution myself, Sally Gardner lets you almost taste history with her wonderful descriptions and colourful cast of characters.
I have such fondness for Yann and Sido and their respective path in and out of each other’s lives. Tetu is the kind of guardian you could almost wish for and both the marquis and dastardly Kalliovski are interesting and scary in different ways.
Perfection!!!

Enchanting

A well written and enchanting tale. I was drawn to the synopsis of this book but have to say it far exceeded my expectations. Listening on audible to the wonderful tones of Tom H and all the voices he gave the character really bought this book to life. I dreaded the book ending - it was almost like my wind down grown up fairy tale.
Plenty of lovable characters and pace to boot.

Great narration but book itself is a mess

I’ve read this book before but decided to listen again when I realised TH narrated it, a bit disappointing as all the chapters are mixed up and they stop and start in between each other! Like the order is all messed up!
