Summary
Yrsa Sigurdardottir, winner of the 2015 Petrona Award for best Scandinavian Crime Novel, delivers another tour de force in her second novel in the Freyja and Huldar series.
A chilling note predicting the deaths of six people is found in a school's time capsule, 10 years after it was buried. But surely, if a 13-year-old wrote it, it can't be a real threat....
Detective Huldar suspects he's been given the investigation simply to keep him away from real police work. He turns to psychologist Freyja to help understand the child who hid the message. Soon, however, they find themselves at the heart of another shocking case.
For the discovery of the letter coincides with a string of macabre events: body parts found in a garden, followed by the murder of the man who owned the house. His initials are BT, one of the names on the note.
Huldar and Freyja must race to identify the writer, the victims and the murderer before the rest of the targets are killed....

Thoroughly enjoyable
Enjoyed this one more than the first in the series. Fast pace and grabbed my interest all the time. I found the narrator very good and really bought the story to life. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Quite shocking but a good listen
Quite grisly in its murderous content. Not for the faint hearted but a good listen with lots of twists even at the end. Lots of characters but well drawn together.

Very good read
Love both Hulda/Freya books and hope there are more in this series. There are serious issues in plot but relationship between main characters lightens things.

promising start but boring
I struggled with the story, the start was promising but it was a tedious listen. It was a strength of will to keep going. Too descriptive and dialogue was lacking flow with lots of short sentences. So many characters.

Awful - boring, weak story and unoriginal
I very much enjoyed previous books from this author. This one is a huge disappointment. A silly and weak storyline. Superficial characters and a ultimately boring and predictable story with supernatural elements. Don’t bother.

A bit slow
Probably the most interesting part is the book being set in Iceland. It's a bit slow. I do like the protagonists and (spoiler alert).... I fully predict at this pace they could get together in book 10.

Really not sure about this
I love my Scandi thrillers but think I enjoy watching rather than listening. Get into a real muddle with the strange names and lose the plot because of that. A good idea but stretched to breaking point and am afraid I kept having to return to previous chapters 'cos I was somewhat lost. Final twist that I had not expected but perhaps that's because I missed some very important moments/chapters whilst in a tizzy. Such a shame but can't say this was a great read so will return with sorrow.

There's good news and bad news
I am a huge fan of Icelandic film so started to listen to this with anticipation. This whole literary experience might as well have been set in Catford with it sounding more like an endless episode of The Bill [dead and gone for good reason] with hideous careless characters, none of which we got to know in depth except maybe Freya and I ended up playing cheesy-line-hackneyed-expression BINGO which in a perverse way did not disappoint! The Icelandic names are very confusing as lots are actually very similar sounding which makes me sound like a moron but I really tried to keep them separate but there was so little character building they had no substance from the off. Zero referencing to the fact it was set in Iceland [inlike say Peter May's books in Lewis with huge attention to local Scottish detail and language] and the characters were coarse, blunt, unbelievably corny, unmemorable, and the narrators voice was grating or sneery or just NOT convincing. Coming out of a Hilary Mantel epic this came over in comparison as almost pointless and but for the fact the plot was actually quite good and I am NOT a quitter I ploughed on to the end. Really not worth the hours of dedication to this cause I am sorry to relate.
