Yoo Kyeung Kim
In a near-future United States, anyone appearing to be of East Asian descent is subject to strict rules, segregation, and constant surveillance. Now, the authoritarian government has unveiled a new loyalty exam to test their commitment to so-called American values. What exactly it takes to pass is unclear, and the price of failure is high: being locked away with other “Oriental threats.”
The Kim family’s exam is scheduled for Thanksgiving—the first time they will all be together since Sorah Kim walked out on her husband and daughter twelve years ago. As they reunite under the watchful eye of a government officer with secrets of his own, the three must find a way to trust one another again, at least for the weekend. But the examination’s opaque rules strain the family’s already fragile bonds, forcing long-buried resentments, regrets, and unspoken dreams to the surface. When a blizzard plunges them into darkness, the exam’s true purpose is exposed, and the Kims must decide what they are willing to risk to reclaim their humanity and their hope.
Through one family’s harrowing journey, The Reasons complicates the American dream as it deftly interrogates racism, motherhood, and generational trauma on a human scale. Both propulsive and heartrendingly intimate, this prescient debut asks what it means to belong—to society and to the ones we love.

Eleştirmen yorumları
“Yoo Kyeung Kim’s exquisite novel, The Reasons, is about an immigrant family’s harrowing fight for survival in an America fractured and ruled by hate and fear of the Other. This is a deeply moving story about the American Dream, the suffocating weight of family expectations, and the tenacity of love and hope in the face of unimaginable horror. Riveting, truly frightening, and brilliant.”—Patmeena Sabit, author of the Giller Prize finalist Good People
“In a world where people of East Asian descent live constricted lives, threatened with disappearance, and tested for loyalty, Yoo Kyeung Kim’s The Reasons is a resonant, compelling tale of a small family facing bleak choices. Kim deftly raises questions about society and identity, while skillfully weaving an intensely personal record of one family’s nightmarish Thanksgiving. Searing, tender, and terrifying, combining elements of the Japanese internment and The Handmaid’s Tale, this is an amazing, timely book: an unforgettable vision of a future that might yet come to be.”—Yangsze Choo, New York Times bestselling author of The Fox Wife and The Night Tiger
“The Reasons is a bold and shattering work of imagination, conjuring an all-too-plausible near future with a precision that will leave readers in awe. Despite the impossible challenges they face, the family members at the center of Kim’s gripping narrative find sources of love and resilience in a world torn apart by prejudice and war. A harrowing and timely debut.”—Bruce Holsinger, author of The Displacements and Culpability, an Oprah’s Book Club pick
