Summary

Talent means nothing when it comes to getting better. Practice is everything. But exactly what is good practice? How does good practice create talent?

The focus of this book is music practice, but these techniques and mindsets can be applied to any skill you want to improve. The Practice of Practice covers essential practice strategies and mindsets you won't find in any other book. You'll learn what research tells us about practice, but more importantly, you'll learn how great musicians in many genres of music think about practice, and you'll learn the strategies and techniques they use to improve.

This book will help you get better faster, whether you play rock, Bach, or any other kind of music. It will also help you be a more informed teacher or a more effective parent of a young learner. Don't practice longer, practice smarter.

Very engaging and insightful

Very useful and insightful read with lots of great examples. Would have loved more music in it but still great.

Superb

I loved this book. I am an adult cello student and this book has encouraged me so much. I am about to buy a music practice journal and am going to listen again and take notes this time. Talent is just practice. I fully get that now. Highly recommended

Superb and practical

Not the greatest audio quality (a little tinny at times) but we'll read and really fantastic content.

A few good ideas

Some good ideas, but some of it seemed to me to be in a foreign language - clams, chops etc! I appreciate that plenty of other people will understand this stuff! But seriously, it didn't detract too much from the content, that was mostly quite inclusive of types of music played.

Well read, engaging, interesting content

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I plan to re-listen in a week or two which is the best endorsement I can give.

Update: Still useful and motivating on the second listen. I've also since listened to and read some related content, and this is certainly among the better materials out there.

Only one minus

Only thing with this that is a bit annoying is that it gives hints about things to listen to or links to things that falls between due to audio book… guess it’s about rights and problems with adding music into a book… but only down in this!

It wasn't for me

I was encouraged by all the great reviews for this book.
Sadly it wasn't for me. Whilst there were some good tips for improving practice, I found his examples too long winded, particularly the examples that had nothing to do with music.
The constant references to his website were annoying, This is an audiobook about music practice, why not include these musical examples? I feel it didn't work as a complete book.
I had to slow the narration down, because the delivery was too fast.
I nearly got to the end, but I decided to stop and go practise my saxophone and flute. instead. so in a way, the book worked!
