Not very positive

To be honest I don't find the title very suitable as I don't find the book very positive. I feel like the author has a clear opinion of what she thinks is the right way to give birth (which might not suit all the readers) and that she thinks that healthcare providers have a different opinion and will likely try to convince you to go a different route. My experience is that the healthcare providers listen to mothers wishes and try to meet them and that there is no need to be "on one's guard". I expected something different when purchasing the book, a pity!

One of the best books on pregnancy & birth

It's trailblazing. There are a couple of famous books which every expecting mother (and her family perhaps...) has to read for a clear and empowering, and true view - this is one of them. With this book Milli can plant the seed of the belief that the mother is the most responsible person of her child's birth in every woman, no matter which birth setting she feels safe and confident in. You simply must have this book if you want to give birth.

Good for first timers

This book is good for FTM’s who don’t work in the NHS. The authors opinion is laid heavily throughout which is fine. I got it to teach me techniques to keep calm etc like hypnobirthing techniques but it’s actually a book packed full of info like options, your rights, useful hints and tips. Wasn’t what I was looking for but was useful all the same! Have recommended it to a friend.

The perfect preparation for a positive birth

I listened to a chapter at a time in the bath while I was pregnant with my first baby and it was the perfect, most calming, preparation for birth. I learnt so much without it being overwhelming, and finished it feeling empowered to make the right birth choices for me which I went on to do despite my birth not “going to plan”. 100% recommend to any mums to be.

Loved it, but can be judgy

So I loved this book, but at times it comes across as judgemental. For example, I’m someone who wants to breast feed, but the book definitely changes its tone the minute formula is mentioned. I’m also someone who wants to give birth in the hospital, but the books tone pushes towards home births etc. Overall really enjoyable, but could be more open minded!

Absolutely fantastic!

This so my second pregnancy and there is still so much to learn! From My first I learnt that knowledge is power, especially when it comings to having the birth that’s right for you as no one knows your body better then you do. This helped to inform me and make me available of my choices, especially as I want a home birth this time around as had to fight for as little intervention as I could manage with my last birth in hospital. I can see some may not agree with the author, but she seems to follow very similar beliefs to me and has made me feel even more empowered and excited and even less scared of my options if a home birth becomes no longer available. Thankyou I will be sharing this book with all my pregnant mamas.

Dangerous

As someone who is medically educated (I’m not a doctor of people) with a law degree also, i was open to new views and wanted to listen to this book. However I have found it to be indirectly negative and more worryingly, dangerous. As much as the author (who narrates) has clearly done her research she is forced to admit that statistics show first time mothers are safer in hospital. Additionally, she goes on to imply that should your plan not be as you wish i.e. a home birth or no pain relief is not possible, that somehow you have failed. This is absolutely and totally inappropriate in today’s world. The book claims to empower women while making out if you can’t be in a primal state reminding yourself you’re a mammal that you have failed.

She claims things that go wrong normally go wrong slowly. Haemorrhage waits for no one.

I urge women who actually listen to/read this to do so with caution. The words can be damaging and dangerous.

Really helpful

Loved the way it talked you through all eventualities and the birth preferences stickers that comes with the book is great to help put an easy to understand birth preference document. My midwives didn't question a thing and could easily understand what I wanted and when. Definitely recommend a listen. My partner listened to one of the chapters too and it gave him everything he needed to know in each situation. As a result he was the best birth partner

So, so, so useful!

Easy to listen to. Informative. Non-judgmental. Wish I had known about this book at the PBM with my first pregnancy. Will be sending on to any prego friends!

Great Book

This book was so inspiring and helpful. It definitely keeps one in a positive mindset when it comes to birth and labor. The reader also spoke very clear and had good animation in her voice when needed.

Must have for any type of birth!

This is a great book for preparing for any birth. I was skeptical but kept hearing great things about it so I went ahead and bought it. Absolutely no regrets. This book will help you work together as a team to have the best birth outcome possible, no matter if it’s a home birth, birthing center or hospital. You need to work together with whoever will be by your side and Milli walks you step by step to think about what your ideal birth looks like.
