It is the sweltering summer of 1997 when strait-laced, straight-A student Karen meets Biba - a bohemian and impossibly glamorous aspiring actress. She is drawn to her new friend’s carefree world of constant parties, and quickly abandons her old life to move into the crumbling Highgate mansion Biba shares with her brother Rex and a stream of lodgers. For a while, life is one long summer of love. But summer must end. And by the end of theirs, two people would be dead.

Erin always writes books with such easy to recognise characters. You van picture the 3 main protaganists so well. You are also transported to, I believe, late 1970's onwards London town. A time when things were simple, no social media and friendships that meant being in people's actual proximity. The clothes, the house, the whole college, hippy scene is there. It is easy to see how Karen was woven into Biba's lifestyle. Biba, a free spirit, along with her brother Rex, show Karen a different side of London and a more laid back type of life than the one she and her parents had set out for her. I loved their love story, yes that's what it is. A love story that of course, like most? soon turns dark. Another fab listen and a great ending which satisfyied me a great deal.
Erin if you read this, could you do a novella of Biba's story? I would love to hear her side. ;)

I would highly recommend this debut novel from Erin Kelly. At times there are hints of early Ruth Rendell and I loved the intermingling of past and present. It keeps you gripped and guessing most of the way through. My only criticism is at times some of the characters were a little unbelievable but this is not a huge problem. I am very excited to see Kelly's new novel on Audible and can't wait to listen

A great debut!

I listen to audio books mostly at night to help me get to sleep. I find concentrating on a plot or subject combined with the childhood comfort of being read aloud to, helps me drift off. However...every now and then I come across books that are a bit too good and I strain to keep awake to find out what happens next..such as with Erin Kelly's!
This book and her others are a great mix of likeable or relatable characters, with some gentle daily life stuff mixed with an exciting mystery/crime plot with some twists (some expected some less so!) So pretty perfect for me and I'd highly recommend.
My only quibble with this story is I found the "girl crush" in it a bit sickly at first which nearly put me off. However things develop interestingly enough , and I suppose we've all had a friend or would-be friend we've gotten a bit obsessed with when younger!

I've found an author I can't get enough of!

Ooh just my sort of thing. A rambling house in London, an assortment of damaged, dysfunctioal characters. This reminded me of Ruth Rendell writing as Barbara Vine - The House of Stairs, A Dark Adapted Eye, A Fatal Inversion etc.
Wonderful story, l couldn't stop listening. My first Erin Kelly audible, but it won't be the last

Amazing.....

Girl more or less falls in love with a free spirit and her brother. It’s not the first book along these lines, but it was interesting and kept me entertained. I didn’t find any of the twists surprising, but some of the story development was surprising and there was tension because of the jumps between past and present. Perhaps 5 stars was generous, could have been 4. Anyway, I’ll try another book by this author.

A good read
