Summary

It is 1837, and for the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain and his rag-tag pirate crew, life on the high seas has gotten a little dull. With nothing to do but twiddle their hooks and lounge aimlessly on tropical beaches, the Captain decides it's time they had an adventure. A surprisingly successful boat raid leads them to the young Charles Darwin, in desperate need of their help.

And so the pirates set forth for London in a bid to save the scientist from the evil machinations of a diabolical Bishop. There they encounter grisly murder, vanishing ladies, the Elephant Man - and have an exciting trip to the zoo.

A slow start but worth it.

Very good reading by the author, but sometimes felt like it could have been funnier or pacier in places. A good setting up story for the rest of the series.

Brilliantly read pirate adventure!

I thought it was really exciting and funny. It was even better than the film!

A short, but perfectly-formed chuckle!

If you could sum up The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists in three words, what would they be?

Luxuriant, ham night

What did you like best about this story?

The continual asides & subtle jokes that are interwoven amongst the story.

Have you listened to any of John Lee’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't, however his performance was excellent and got the tone just right; really made the most of the particular humour style that the author writes with.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Odd question, as there is a film of the book! Erm...how about...The best pirate story you've heard all year- or the Captain will run you through, before hoisting the mainsail.

Any additional comments?

Would be absolutely brilliant to have more of the 'Pirates in adventures with...' series turned into audiobooks. In the meantime, I can thoroughly recommend the 'physical books' for a read, as they are very much 'pick up at any point' kind of books, as the plot is generally not too important!
