Summary

Tormented her entire life by inhuman voices, Jennsen seeks to end her intolerable agony. She at last discovers a way to silence the voices. For everyone else, the torment is about to begin.

Richard Rahl and his wife, Kahlan, have been reunited after their long separation, but with winter descending and the paralyzing dread of an army of annihilation occupying their homeland, they must venture deep into a strange and desolate land. Their quest turns to terror when they find themselves the helpless prey of a tireless hunter.

Exploited by those intent on domination, Jennsen finds herself drawn into the center of a violent struggle for conquest and revenge. Worse yet, she finds her will seized by dark forces more abhorrent than anything she ever envisioned. Only then does she come to realize that the voices were real.

Staggered by loss and increasingly isolated, Richard and Kahlan desperately struggle to survive. But if they are to live, they must stop the relentless, unearthly threat that comes out of the darkest night of the human soul. To do so, Richard will be called upon to face the demons stalking among the Pillars of Creation.

Strange one

it's not that I dislike this book, it's just not what I wanted from the next installment. A little too much time is spent with the new characters and not enough with the usual gang. While not a bad idea to switch perspectives, I felt that this could have been a much shorter book than it was, and would have made the new characters more digestible.

No more arigato Mr robato

Audio a bit robotic, as in the quality not Jim's narration. Which as ever was great.

Decent book, enjoyed the story.

Slow start

It takes way too long for the story to go anywhere, but the last 4 hours makes a little bit up for the almost borrowing beginning.

Torn

It's another book that seems to just be a filler, just like Soul of the Fire, and Faith of the Fallen. They're not really unnecessary as they contribute with their arcs of character developments, rather than grand victories and astonishing revelations.

I was quite excited for this book because I began watching Legend of the Seeker about when it came out, when I was younger, and knew of what Jennsen was and who she was, but the show is so different sometimes from the books so I was still wanting to hear her deeper and more fleshed out story. It was.. a bit painful to listen to 20+ hours about her story, though, but it was so relieving at the end when she came to her senses.

Narrator did a horrible job actually, for the most part. Whereas Jagang's voice previously has been almost demonic and has that real 'husky' sound, just like the book describes, he sounds so plain and normal in this book. Adie, ADIE, of all people had a more wicked voice, which was astonishingly strange. He did a -great- job however on Oba. It was amazing how that insufferable character brought up genuine hate towards him, partly why was because of the voice. Spot on with Oba, but so wrong otherwise.

Like others have said, you can skip this book and it wouldn't matter much, but I think, from what I hear, it is to a degree necessary and good of Terry to introduce her and her ungiftedness, because I think it will have a lot of trouble in the future, and she will pay a big part in it.

(Spoilers below)

She might avert some prophecy just because of her existence and maybe she will solve that Chainfire spell I've heard about, or perhaps she will pay the same role as she did in the show; she will undo the corruptive autocratic magic of Orden.
