Summary

An orphan leaves Dark Ages London, taking a dangerous journey and posing as a Jew to study medicine in Persia, in "an adventurous and inspiring tale" (Library Journal).

A child holds the hand of his dying mother and is terrified, aware something is taking her. Orphaned and given to an itinerant barber-surgeon, Rob Cole becomes a fast-talking swindler, peddling a worthless medicine. But as he matures, his strange gift - an acute sensitivity to impending death - never leaves him, and he yearns to become a healer.

Arab madrassas are the only authentic medical schools, and he makes his perilous way to Persia. Christians are barred from Muslim schools, but claiming he is a Jew, he studies under the world's most renowned physician, Avicenna. How the woman who is his great love struggles against her only rival - medicine - makes a riveting modern classic.

The Physician is the first book in New York Times best-selling author Noah Gordon's Dr. Robert Cole trilogy, which continues with Shaman and concludes with Matters of Choice.

A Page Turner

This story of a young man born in Medieval London during the reign of King Kute & his transformation through his life to become
Hakim, the Persian word for physician. For a Christian to become a Physician as deemed sacrilegious by powerful Islamic world kill infidels on sight. The protagonist, Rob J Cole, had become something different than a Christian or a Muslim in order to accomplish the metamorphosis from a Dark Age European to an Enlightened scientist.
The adventures lived & the growth under gone was inspiring, I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of olde England & Ancient Persia, their culture, the harshness and impossibly of life and historical allusions. The book is a great escape to a world far far from here.

Fascinating Read

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this fantastic book. It is set in the early years of the 11th century, which of itself is unusual. A young man grows up to be a barber surgeon and subsequently travels to Persia to study medicine. His journey to Persia and his life there are most educative. My only criticism is that within the extraordinary task of reading this long book, in the main, masterfully done, there are numerous examples of mispronunciation which are irritating and unfortunate. Highly recommended read.

Fabulous story

Fabulous story, well narrated. Long. But worth it, as even the plunged into bit of story not necessary for the plot were a delight.

Listen to it. It’s such a fantastic story.

Yes, the narrator is a bit flimsy on accents. But it doesn’t matter, because the story is just astounding in both detail and breadth. Please listen to it.

And if you think it’s too slow, you’re probably better off listening to a Jack Reacher anyway.
