A stunning debut novel following five women from three generations of a once eminent Iranian family as their lives are turned upside down.

The Valiat family are in crisis. Elizabeth, the regal matriarch, remained in Tehran despite the revolution and only has Niaz, her Islamic law-breaking granddaughter for company. In America, Elizabeth’ s daughters, the flamboyantly high-flying Shirin and frustrated housewife Seema, are wondering if their new lives there are all they had hoped for. Lastly, there’s the second granddaughter, Bita, a disillusioned law student trying to find deeper meaning by giving away her worldly belongings.

When an annual vacation in Aspen goes wildly awry and Shirin ends up being bailed out of jail, gossip about the family spreads like wildfire. Soon, Shirin sets out to restore the family name to its former glory. But what does that mean in a country where the Valiats never mattered to anyone? And, will reputation be enough to make them a family again?

The Persians is an irresistible portrait of a unique family in turmoil that explores timeless questions of love, money, art and fulfilment. Here is their past, their present and a possible new future for them all.

None of the characters gripped me and the story was lacking. Was expecting more history.

not one for me

Beautiful spacious writing! I wanted to breathe it all in! Loved the choreography of characters across time, cultures and continents.

Elegant, far reaching

I like that this book opened my eyes about the old Iran, the one most of us can forget considering the ongoing geopolitics.

Informative, different perspective

Darkly funny, multi-generational family saga following Iranian women navigating life between Tehran & the US

Female-focused, with men mostly absent from the page

Tackles exile, cultural identity, motherhood & patriarchy

Sharp, cynical narration (Shireen’s voice – a highlight)

Perfect if you enjoy women-centred stories with dark humour

Didn’t love the lack of plot or any of the characters

Could’ve used more of a plot line. And a sprinkle of lovable characters.

Interesting and educative but there’s so much in this I need to listen again or read the book to get the true experience

Excellent narrators

A fantastic family story told through a female only perspective. I really enjoyed the voice of each of these women and each of their stories they are all so different. Shirin’s feisty personality was definitely my favourite. The embedding of culture both the old world of Iran mixed with the capitalism and materialism of the US made this book so rich and layered.

What a debut

I enjoyed flipping many stereotypes and getting to see behind the scenes of a very unfamiliar world. It’s very entertaining too, I laughed out loud a few times.

Refreshing insight into another world

Overall, very boring. I will be returning this title. Focuses on the women in a rich and influential family most if whom left Iran after the revolution for the US. Not a single likeable character; even the granddaughter who gives away all her money at the end is quite irritating.
It is difficult to work out the relationships sometimes in this audio version. needs a pdf with a family tree.

I learnt nothing about 'Persian' people or culture
