Story
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? Available only on audio, because as Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

Excellent story and wonderfully narrated!
The author put together an expertly crafted plot. I personally didn't want to get out of the car each time I listened. The narration was on point and really brought the story to life. To address a prior review I just read, which drove me to write this one as I do not normally write many reviews. It seems they reviewed this book incorrectly as there was only one narrator and the author is a man. This book is an amazing story with plenty of interest!

Creepy story!
This audio was an excellent listen. The narrator was great and I can't wait to listen to the next book!
This a story of a guy, Tim, who buys a fixer up after a really crappy divorce. This is no ordinary fixer upper though because it’s haunted and when I say haunted, this house is in a league of its own. Tim has to figure out the mystery of the woman who haunts the house before he winds up like all of the former owners. Dead.
This world was so wonderfully written and narrated. I was so invested in these characters I genuinely got angry at a certain point of the book. I cannot wait to listen the next book, Dead Woman Scorned, when it comes out.

Great haunted house
This story doesn’t let up. Right from the beginning there is tension and it haunts you throughout the book. Malicious spirits have a home at the old secluded house in New Hampshire. Tim has sunk the last of his money into buying the property after his divorce and feels that he has to do what he can to help the spirits rest.
This book deserves all the praise and I couldn’t stop listening once I got started. It is very unnerving as one of the ghosts appear seemingly at random all over the property dripping with anger and hate and willing to take it out on whom ever path she crosses.
A straight forward haunted house book that immediately moved to the top of my favorites in that sub-genre.

loved it
I enjoyed listening to this on audio. For me it is hard to get into a book about the supernatural, but this is the second book that I have read that I've loved. There was just enough spook that had me scared at times. When a angry ghost sets out to torment any one who dares to live in the house the ghost lives in things get Scarry..

Love a good ghost story
A man is starting over with a fixer upper farm house out in New Hampshire, but what he does not know is that it is already occupied! I love haunted house books, and this one did not disappoint, Although there are parts that can be a little wordy, oit was creepy and gave you, the reader, a chance to try to solve the mystery. I wish that the narrator was better, he really took away from the feel of the story. He had no inflection in his reading, leaving a lot to be desired. I plan on re-reading the book on my own to give it my own inflections!

Pretty much OK
The story travels fairly quickly and the people are interesting. But it’s not exactly high drama. One of the biggest problems was that it sounded like high school drama students reading the parts. I almost feel sorry for the author, because the people reading her book sound awkward.
