Summary

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

"All the ingredients of suspense, drama and meticulous attention to detail that have made Grisham's novels bestsellers... A terrific read" ( Sunday Mirror)

"One terrific book–smart, fast, stingingly satiric, and almost criminally entertaining" ( Entertainment Weekly)

Good story - kept me hooked.

The reason I withheld 5 stars is I found it hard to keep track of all the characters! The names were horribly complex and difficult. So many characters too. But the story was good as always with Grisham.

Easy listening and gripping story

From start to finish the book roles along with a slow, methodical pace. It's an easy listen without too many surprises. I loved the dulcet tones of the narrator which in many ways made the listening experience more enjoyable. If you love Grisham novels, this will not disappoint you, if you are new to the author, it's certainly one of his easier read/slistens

Brilliant story until the last 5 minutes!

Love John Grisham, loved this story and all it's twists and turns. But then the last 10 minutes was a total let down!
Anyone getting this, switch of before the last chapter and imagine your own ending!

Like listening to a jigsaw puzzle

I'm always in a rush when writing these reviews because generally I've been listening in the car on the way to work and want to write a review before I start. Today is no exception.

I loved this story, you start off knowing the bare bones of what has happened to Patrick and it's like listening to someone putting together a jigsaw piece by piece and eventually you can see what the picture is, but certain bits are still missing, not to be filled in until the very end.

The pace was well set, always leaving you wanting more and listening to just one more chapter.

The narrator is very familiar to me now and I have grown accustomed to his voices.

Overall 5 stars, if you have enjoyed any of Grishams other books you will love this.

Gripping story, poor performance

Loved John Grisham's work as usual but the narrator spoke like a Hollywood film trailer throughout.

Gripping Story

An intense and gripping story. I did guess the ending early on, but it didn’t make much of a difference to the enjoyment. The narrator did spoil it and became rather irritating to listen to.

A page turner though a rather unlikely story

As usual John Grisham tells a good story and the narration is very good. Most details add up and made sense until the twist at the end which, to me, seemed totally bonkers. For anyone who likes legal thrillers, this is an enjoyable ride with all the usual ingredients of brilliant legal minds and corruption in high places. You almost like and want to support the protagonist but somewhere in the story, seems he may have gone too far.. No more spoilers. Just read it and make your own mind up.
