Sometimes you look in the mirror...sometimes it looks back.

Those who belong to the secret society called The Oversight know many things. They know cold iron will hold back the beasts in the darkness. They know it is dangerous to stand between two mirrors. And they know that despite their dwindling numbers, it remains their duty to protect humanity from the predations of the supernatural. And vice versa.

But two of the society's strongest members, Mr. Sharp and Sara Falk, are trapped in the world between the mirrors, looking for each other, searching for a way back home. What they discover there will have ominous consequences both for The Oversight and the world it protects - effects that will make them question everything they thought they knew.

The dark waters rise. The candle is guttering. But the light still remains. For now....

Eleştirmen yorumları

" The Oversight is - and let's be clear here - something very special.... It's oh so moreish a morsel. I'd read a prequel this evening, a sequel as soon as." (Tor.com)
"Exciting, exhilarating, scary and moving in equal measure, The Oversight is a teeming world of dark deeds and dark magics, brilliantly realised. This feels like the start of something amazing." (M. R. Carey, author of The Girl with All the Gifts)
"A highly entertaining fantasy that promises a trilogy worth sinking your teeth into." ( SciFiNow)
"A dark and glinting book...told in a kind of compelling and hypnotic poesie that I just lapped up.... I'll certainly be reading the next one." (Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing.net)

... Spoiled by poor production: the audio editor hasn't erased all the retakes, which can be very jarring.

Good story ...

I think Charlie Fletcher is exceptionally talented, but like almost every other review, he's not a narrator. Simon Peebles was amazing. AMAZING. In this medium the narrator is everything and can make or break a story - they can render a great story even better and a terrible story tolerable. I'd advise a re-recording. I'm going to read this one on my kindle because his writing is top notch!

Change of narrator is a mistake

Narrated by Mr Fletcher himself, bonus!
There's a lot going on here and it sets up the next book all the way through.
Waiting is now the frustrating part (for the next book).

Quality continuation to a solid first book

If you could sum up The Paradox in three words, what would they be?

Tense, gripping, enjoyable

What did you like best about this story?

Entertaining and gripping from start to finish. Better pacing than the first book.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The part on the Thames.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, too much tension (which is a good thing). Definitely needed breaks in between exciting parts.

Any additional comments?

A lot of other reviews commented negatively on the performance of the author who is reading. While the performance is different to the oversight and maybe just not quite as good, I was very pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed it a lot. I think the change in narration is jarring if you are listening back to back after the first book but objectively the performance is good and very enjoyable.

Great story and performance

Despite my initial worries about the author reading his own novel (are you watching Scott Seigler) he did a very good job of distinguishing the various characters.
I don't normally buy fantasy books but after acquiring the Oversight by one of Amazon's offers I was hooked.
Now I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Surprisingly well narrated.
