Summary

The seventh book in the epic and bestselling series that has gripped millions.

A hero will be forged from this broken land.

As seen on Netflix and BBC around the world.

Alfred the Great is dead and Edward his son reigns as king. Wessex survives but peace cannot hold. The Danes in the north, led by Viking Cnut Longsword, stand ready to invade and will never rest until the emerald crown is theirs.

Uhtred, once Alfred’s great warrior but now out of favour with the new king, must lead a band of outcasts north to recapture his old family home, that great Northumbrian fortress, Bebbanburg.

Loyalties will be divided and men will fall, as every Saxon kingdom is drawn into the bloodiest battle yet with the Danes; a war which will decide the fate of every king, and the entire English nation.

Critic reviews

"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive" (George R.R. Martin)

"Cornwell draws a fascinating picture of England as it might have been before anything like England existed" (The Times)

"He's called a master storyteller. Really he's cleverer than that" (Telegraph)

Unreal!

The detail that goes in to this story. I can almost see myself in that shield wall!

More excellent episodes into an older Utred's life

Great Narrator,. Excellent insight into an older & wiser Utters & his life & loyal followers. Glory galore in the battle fields.

Another great

I picked up the audiobooks part way through the series and I admit I found it difficult to follow at first. I've read many books over the years and I like to adapt the intonation, voices and pronunciations of names in my own imagination. So to hear someone else take that on where it differs does grate a little at first. However this was particularly annoying to discover the change of narator for this book. I wish they wouldn't mess about with things like this, it just spoils the overall effect. Can you imagine swapping out Sean Bean for a few installments of Sharpe? I don't think so! I also found myself partly hearing the voice of the actor from the TV series now out. I may well return to just reading books. I like having my own library you can see, touch and smell.

Yep, brilliant

It's never a surprise that Bernard Cornwell can deliver a great book.

So many authors struggle to keep the sequels interesting, but Uhtred's tale continues to be an exciting page turner.

Loved that he was up to his birthplace at last and I'll be listening to more very soon!

Oh my God!! What a book 😃

Action, action, action. With such fast paced battle narration that made me feel I was in the shield wall. I experienced tears of joy and anguish throughout the book. I loved every minute from start to finish.

A good listen

Would you consider the audio edition of The Pagan Lord to be better than the print version?

Yes, particularly as Matt Bates narrates the story very well.

Any additional comments?

I have listened or read all the previous parts to this story therefore I enjoyed it however: I am beginning to wonder if the hero is now the oldest man on earth.

better narration, though the story takes time

really glad I persevered through the terrible narration in the last two books. This new narrator is better, way better but still some way off the quality of the first narrator.
The story in this book takes quite a while to get going but stay with it. It builds nicely to a terrific climax.

Heart stopping!

This was my first re-“read” of this book since its publication.
I’d forgotten how funny, poignant and complex it was.
I’ve seen a lot of negativity about Matt’s narration but for me his performances are wonderful, he gives Uthred a roguish edge that I feel suits the character perfectly.
I’m off to purchase the next one!

great

Gripped by yet another thrilling tale of Uhtred. Loved the development of the relationship with his sons. While not the most epic story in the sequence so far, The Pagan Lord felt the most empassioned, with an excellent struggle against the church and a fantastic antagonist. Loved it. I thought the new narrator did a great job too and I really hope it does not change for a 3rd time! Each time I get used to someone they change... That's my only criticism so far but will definitely be something I look out for when deciding on future audio books.
