Summary

It was supposed to be just sex...Famous last words.

Tyler doesn't overthink pleasure and avoids complications. He knows it might be stupid to get involved with his closeted boss, but the temptation is too great. At first, the cold and beautiful Joel Sandstrom seems to loathe Tyler's guts.

Except one late night at the office, his reasons become clear...and his control breaks.

Every time they touch, Joel's stony face comes alive, harsh lines smooth out, and for a minute, he looks serene. Happy, even. Just sex - dirty, intense, spectacular sex.

During their covert encounters, Tyler discovers the power he has over the lonesome man, and it's a heady feeling. What if he could set Joel free and give him peace of mind? When Tyler realizes how much Joel needs him, he doesn't regret breaking his own rules.

Gay erotic romance. Contains explicit scenes and sexual interactions between more than two partners. For adult readers only.

Passionate and powerful!

Wow, just wow!! Passionate and powerful, steamy and sexy!! A truly liberating story!!

A really honest and dynamic book! Passionate and caring! It starts off as an enemy to lovers tale, then transforms into something so much more beautiful. The chemistry and connections are organic and authentic and I found this book exceptionally written. The words just flow so easily and you are taken on a ride of sexual freedom and discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and could feel all the interconnection characters, their love, and their lives. I loved every part of the journey.

I enjoyed the freedom of sexuality found in this book and found it liberating. The sexual exploration was well done and approached with compassion. I felt the individual connections and love as well as the sexual chemistry and connections when two couple come together (pun totally intended lol). I found the whole thing liberating and somewhat powerful. I can imagine how feeling this story would have been for Roe to write and it’s crafted into something very special.

Amazing and definitely worth a read and/or listen!!

Thanks for reading!

Smokin’ Hot 🥵

I read this book when it was released and loved it so I was over the moon to find the Audio version.

Firstly it’s hot! Like hot, hot! Don’t let that fool you though, it’s not just erotica. It’s a fantastic love story and a tale about overcoming painful hang ups given to us by our parents! Tyler started off as a guy who you could easily dislike but ended up being one of my favourite characters. I could see him falling in love and it rocked his world. Joel, poor Joel, tortured mentally by an awful Father was gradually but completely changed by Tyler.

As I said, I loved reading this but Vance Bastian’s narration gave it a new depth for me. Fantastic!

Greatly looking forward to the audio of Adam and Christoffer’s story. 5 stars all round - Roe has now become a one click for me.

Really enjoyable!

4.5 Stars Overall!

If you've read my reviews before, you might know I'm one of those strange creatures who prefers plot over sex. If a book has too much sex, I'll likely skim half if not more of the scenes. *shrugs* Now, this isn't as easy to do on audiobooks, so when I pick an erotic romance, I know I'll have to actually go through it all.

I listened to Vanilla Clouds by Roe Horvat, narrated by Vance Bastian, before, so while not quite the same, I am familiar with both of them. And yeah, even if this is not my goto trope, especially after reading there'd be sexual interactions between more than two partners, I still found the book quite enjoyable. Yes, there's a lot of sex scenes. Yes, I wished I could've skimmed (or even skipped) the scenes where Joel and Tyler were with Tyler's friends, Christopher and Adam. And yet, I could see the reason for those scenes and even if they're not my thing, they were hot and well done.

I loved Tyler and I loved seeing how he gradually went from hating Joel to loving him and how their encounters played a big part in that. I adored how supportive he was of Joel when he needed him and how he didn't allow Joel to mess with what they had already built between them just because he was grieving. I liked Joel, although there were several parts in which I just wanted to strangle him. Although, after meeting his horrible father, it wasn't that difficult to see why he was so emotionally stunted. I loved the progression of their relationship, the ups and downs, especially the downs. Ultimately, they were great for each other.

Vance Bastian was amazing! I adored his portrayal of Tyler and the emotion he put into his narration. Frankly speaking, if you can pick up the audiobook for this one, I thoroughly recommend it. Sexy, romantic, angsty and full of emotion, it's an audiobook I'd like to listen to again in the future.

Freedom To Love

I originally read and loved this book ; multiply that times 100, that's how much I loved listening to it.

Having Vance Bastian as the narrator was a good choice. His voice, tone and pace is natural. His narration engaging and expressive. He accurately portrayed Joel and Tyler conflicted feelings, desire and intense sexual chemistry.

The Other Book is a HOT and arousing read/listen , with lots of sex scenes in a variety of situations and couple times more than just the MC . For some it might be a trigger or a limit . It wasn't, for me, as the connection , trust and love during those times between the MC and the secondary characters was truly beautiful and freeing.

There are many interesting plots and subplots in the storyline and the main for me it's about freedom of love and acceptance.

I'm happy to have The Other Book in my permanent audio library as I will be re-listening again and again.

Amazing Book, Perfect Narrator!

I'm a huge fan of Roe's books, and this one is no exception. Vance Bastian captured the characters with perfection, giving them life in the most amazing way possible. The sex scene are always a hit a miss for me, and , again, Vance made it with such maestry that I'm still amazed! 5 stars and much much more. I'm now a fan and will definitely listen to more of his work 🧡

Nice erotic love story with great narration

I read this book and really liked it. The narration by Vance Bastian was well done. It was very easy to slip into his voice and the story flowed seamlessly.

Tyler lets himself get involved with the boss he doesn’t like. At first, because he wants control over the man. Then because he just wants him. Joel needs Tyler even though he won’t admit it.

This book is definitely erotica but it’s also about two men discovering that they do need each other. I really enjoyed how Tyler changed through the story, growing as a person.

I’ve read other books by this author and this one is certainly different. Even though there is a lot of sex there is still a lot of feelings flowing between this pair. At times surprisingly emotional. I enjoyed Tyler and Joel’s journey together, learning to care and open their hearts to each other.

The addition of Christopher and Adam to the story gave it a little more depth. I enjoyed the all the characters. Nicely done story.

Incredibly erotic, and brought to life perfectly!

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I was duly impressed by the writing and the solid storyline here, and the erotic intimate scenes were well off the charts *fans self* It starts with an enemies-to-lovers vibe though as the story goes on it morphs into something more emotional.

Tyler is unapologetically himself, and enjoys a pretty free lifestyle—particularly when it comes to his intimate adventures—and has no problem taking charge. Especially when it comes to his boss, Joel. Joel seems very straight-laced at work, but has a huge weakness when it comes to Tyler. Their clandestine encounters eventually become more…something Joel desperately needs thanks to the stresses in his life.

Make no mistake—this is absolutely an erotic romance. There’s not only plenty of sex scenes, but you’re also going to find some with more than just Tyler and Joel involved. The interesting thing is the scenes are not necessarily just gratuitous; the connections that form and the release they bring for Joel do serve a purpose (and yes, okay, they’re hella hot to read…not gonna lie).

Not all erotic romance is just about the sex, and that is definitely the case here as Joel’s journey is an emotional one and highly personal—not just in the relationship he develops with Tyler, but also in his coming out and in his family life. My only lament with this book is that it is told entirely from Tyler’s point of view; I would have loved to have heard Joel’s thoughts as things unfolded. But even without Joel’s side this story is still moving and had me not wanting to put it down.

I loved this story, and it’s getting the full 5 star rating from me. I’m also intrigued by Tyler’s friends Adam and Christoffer, I’m hoping they’ll have a story of their own to show how they got together as I’d love to read more about them! The Other Book is meant strictly for readers 18+ for adult language and explicit erotic scenes, including some with multiple partners (so if that’s not your thing, you’ve been warned…but if it is your thing, you’re going to enjoy the ride!). Be prepared for the heat, because this book does live up to its reputation ;-)

The narration: This is the first audiobook I’ve listened to from this narrator, and I thought Vance Bastian did a superb job of bringing The Other Book to life. The more intense the physical scenes became between the characters, the more emotional the voices became to portray them. The pacing was even and comfortable, and the voices different enough from each other to know which characters were speaking. This will easily be an audiobook that I’ll be listening to again and again…5 stars for the narration!

Horvat+Bastian=Win

I read this book initially in January of this year…and surprisingly liked it. I’ve included my review of the ebook below but I’m adding my thoughts on the vocal performer first.

My first experience with both this author and this vocal performer was in December 2018 and I became an immediate fan of both. Listening to this book was a no-brainer for me. Mr. Bastian performed this book perfectly and I never knew I loved the name Tyler/Ty until I heard him say it (this gave me reason to pause and rewind several times in the book – who knew?).

-original ebook review-
I read (or actually listened to) my first book by this author last year and immediately became a fan. When the opportunity arose to read this book, I jumped. Although I typically don’t read the author forward at the beginning of books, something in this one caught my eye, so I read it and was further intrigued by the story. In it the author talks about writing and publishing erotica which I typically don’t read but I was still ‘in’ on reading this book. Make no mistake…this is an erotica book. But, there is a really good story here too. If you have a toy drawer, this book will definitely need to go in it.

Understand that there is a LOT of sex in this book. There are also scenes with multiple partners including with a committed couple so if that bothers you, leave this one alone.

At the beginning of the story, I was NOT a fan of Joel and expected this to be just another angry sex, purely erotic tale. But as the story unraveled we learned there was more to him than met the eye. He is hiding. He had a craptastic childhood. He uses sex to escape his pain. He wants Tyler but doesn’t want to want him. However, they work well together both in the bedroom and out of it. I love that Tyler only lets him get away with sex as an escape for so long before he stops him. I also like that Tyler helps set Joel free.

Joel’s switch to sweet when they attempt a relationship (albeit hidden) was a little abrupt but it worked for him and they’re previous interactions with each other, so it only niggled a little.

Overall, I really liked this story even though I typically don’t read erotica because of the lack of story and overabundance of sex. The author struck a good balance of both here.

A wonderful emotion-filled story

At first, I didn’t think I was going to like Tyler. He came across as moody, although to be fair, he seemed to be put upon by his boss. I soon warmed to him as the story quickly progresses to a steamy sexual encounter in the office. This is a sort of enemies-to-lovers story, in that the guys are at each other’s throats until they make out. I liked that Tyler takes control and tells his boss what to do. Tylers turns out to be a very considerate person and just perfect for Joel. Joel is reluctant to come out of the closet to all but a few people and publicly hides his attraction to Tyler for much of the story.

This is a sex-heavy story, although it definitely has a structured plot and the romantic relationship development of the main characters is tied closely to it. The steamy scenes are beautifully written and also include a couple of polyamory scenes with Tyler’s friends, Adam and Christoffer. Again, these scenes are there for a reason. I particularly enjoyed the threesome.

Much of the second half of the story focuses on Joel’s relationship with his homophobic father, the effect the nasty man's words has on him, and Joel's deepening connection with Tyler.

I always like Roe Horvat’s writing style and the Scandinavian touches that are included in his stories. I enjoyed the intensity of this story—and not just because of the sizzling scenes. There are plenty of emotions and feelings created between Joel and Tyler, both in and out of the bedroom, shower, or office.

This is the first book I’ve heard narrated by Vance Bastian. Overall, I liked his voice and narration of this story. At times, I felt he spoke a little too quickly, but not so fast that I missed any words or meaning. His voice distinctions for each character were clear enough, and his intonation and expressions matched the various emotions throughout. Recommended.

A Very Moving Story

I read The Other Book when it was first published at the end of January 2019. The review I wrote then will follow my comments about the narration.

This is the first book I've listened to by Vance Bastian. I liked his voice and really had no big issues with his narration of the story, but I'm kind of glad that I read this one first. I think that his voice sounded a bit too young for how I pictured Tyler in my head when I read the story. The story is told from Tyler's POV so the dialogue is nearly all him. When Joel's voice is needed it does change to something deeper but I still would have liked a bit more mature sounding voice for this book.

------------------------------------------------
The Other Book is the first book I've read by Roe Horvat. I gather from the Author's Note that this is a very different sort of book for him to write. Since I have no basis for comparison, I can only say how I felt about this story: I thought it was very moving and actually kind of wonderful.

It's an erotic story but the various sexual situations are all between consenting adults and the way the scenes were written was so smooth and sensual; I could feel the love flowing between the characters (except in the early scenes when they were just getting off with each other).

This is another one of those books that I'm having a hard time describing how it made me feel. The way that Joel and Tyler first get together gave this an enemies-to-lovers vibe but that didn't last too long. The story contains lots and lots of sex but if most of it was removed, the book would still have been a great romantic story. That may not have come out right… I wouldn't want those scenes removed. I didn't feel like the sex was there just to titillate; it added an element to the story that lets us see how Joel and Tyler's relationship grew.

There are a few intense scenes with Joel's father that made me so angry and so sad for Joel. I loved Tyler's mother, though. She didn't have a lot of scenes in the book but there were enough to know that she is a very caring person and that she has a good relationship with Tyler.

The Other Book was one that I couldn't stop reading once I started and I was glued to my ereader all evening until I finished it. I don't think I've ever read such a sensual and moving erotic MM story. It truly was a very touching story while also being very, very sexy. I hope that Roe Horvat writes more books like this.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Failed attempt at depth

A telling-not-showing book. Tyler was an unprofessional dick.
Narrator was very ho-hum. His moments of high intensity were often a fail for me, unconvincing. Since so much of this story was high drama then that mattered and affected my level of and the continuity of my enjoyment. And "subsequent" isn't pronounced sub-see-quent.
This story's attempt at depth didn't work for me. One suggestion would be to choose more no-sex activities and engagements. I forwarded through parts because I was just ready to have it done.
It was a minor part, but I liked that Tyler had a close relationship with his mom.
