Things were going a little too well for Dylan Delacroix. After upstaging her boss on a big account, she gets dispatched to the last place she wants to be: her hometown, Seattle. There, she must use her superstar corporate-consulting skills to curb the worst impulses of an impossibly eccentric tech CEO - if she doesn’t, she’s fired. One afternoon, a mother opens her front door to find the length of her son's body stretched out on the veranda, swaddled in akwete material, his head on her welcome mat. The Death of Vivek Oji transports us to the day of Vivek's birth, the day his grandmother Ahunna died. It is the story of an over protective mother and a distant father and the heart-wrenching tale of one family's struggle to understand their child, just as Vivek learns to recognise himself.

Yinka wants to find love. The problem is she also has a mum who thinks she's better qualified to find it for her. She also has too many aunties who frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, a preference for chicken and chips over traditional Nigerian food and a bum she's sure is far too small as a result. Oh, and the fact that she's a 31-year-old South-Londoner who doesn't believe in sex before marriage is a bit of an obstacle, too.

Smart, headstrong Kirabo is raised by her grandparents in rural Uganda. But as she enters her teens, she starts to feel overshadowed by the absence of the mother she has never known. At once epic and deeply personal, The First Woman is the bold and piercing story of one young girl’s discovery of what it means to be a woman in a family, a community and a country that seem determined to silence her. Steeped in the rich folklore of Uganda but with an eye firmly on the future, Jennifer Makumbi has written a sweeping, effervescent tale of longing, femininity and courage.

Summary
Bloomsbury presents The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris, read by Aja Naomi King, Joniece Abbott-Pratt, Bahni Turpin and Heather Alicia Sims.
A highlight for 2021 from: Guardian, Time, Independent, Evening Standard, BBC, Stylist, Irish Times, i, Harper's Bazaar, Washington Post, Fortune, Entertainment Weekly and The Sun.
Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and the micro-aggressions, she’s thrilled when Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events cause Nella to become Public Enemy Number One and Hazel, the Office Darling.
Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: Leave Wagner. Now.
It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realises that there is a lot more at stake than her career.
A whip-smart and dynamic thriller and sly social commentary, The Other Black Girl will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist.
Critic reviews
"A bitingly satirical novel about race and the workplace." (Independent)
"Zakiya Dalila Harris is set to be one of 2021's biggest breakout names. Buckle up for a highly entertaining ride that will make some waves this summer." (Stylist)
"Packed full of shrewd observations on power struggles and strength, this is unputdownable." (Cosmopolitan UK)

Great novel, Inconsistencies with the voice over.
I haven't finished it yet but really struggling with the voiceover artists. The prologue was great, the voices after sound strange... Slightly monotone.... I may buy the book instead. A great story though. If you can get past the voices, it has the potential to be gripping.

Black Horror - so well done!
Black horror at it's best is when it is about our existence within white supremacy. What a brilliantly told and frightening story about the existence of Black women in the system. And how we are coopted to keep the wheels turning. So well done. Loved it.

Too long and drawn out
I struggled with this book. I didn't like the narration, it sounded drony and monotonous.
I found the main character Nella, annoying, bitter and unlikeable.
The sub plot, when it was eventually revealed, was far fetched and just plain silly.
The (weak) plot and character development had nowhere to go, there was a lot of filler and repetition, which was frustrating to listen to.
The characters were simple one dimensional stereotypes. I skipped to the last two chapters and found that I had not really missed anything, except the (predictable) ending.

The Other Black Girl Review
Things I liked:
It was a book about black girls in the workplace
There was only one OH MY GOD moment!
Things I didn’t like:
There was no storyline - 33 chapters and not much actually happened
Backstabbing black girl to show less black girl solidarity is a trope I’m not here for
Nella was very annoying cos you wouldn’t do the things she did with the notes and phone number
Malayka added nothing to the story in my opinion
Hazel is the only one that made me feel anything and that’s saying something
There’s not enough character development for me I need to feel like I can see the person they were and the person they have become.
I was bored throughout the book but thought this may as well finish it -reclaiming my time!
Slow start but it never picked up

Awful book. Deceptive blurb. Wouldn’t have picked it up if the blurb had been honest about the fantasy aspect of this book. Hated the surprise.
