Summary

We are in the midst of an obesity epidemic, but despite being inundated with diet advice we are only getting fatter. We count calories and exercise regularly, yet still the pounds won't budge. Why?

In this highly enjoyable and provocative book, Dr Jason Fung sets out a groundbreaking new theory: that obesity is caused by our hormones rather than a lack of self-control.

He reveals that overproduction of insulin in the body is the root cause of obesity and obesity-related illnesses including type 2 diabetes and offers robust scientific evidence that reversing insulin resistance is the only way to lose weight in the long term.

It turns out that when we eat is just as important as what we eat, so in addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong eating habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

Superb and a Game Changer.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The detail and the in depth explanations of physiolog and aetiology of obesity is second to none in my opinion. The delivery of information is set out in such a way that you cannot fail to understand the implications.

An extremely methodical written book. Repeats itself just enough to get the point to hit home. I listened at the slowest setting to absorb it more readily.

I have total Faith that Dr Fung has done his research and constantly refers to academic papers and critically analyses them in a manner that I would do myself. This gives me the confidence to trust his opinions without me having to spend the time trawling the internet looking for others opinions. I still do that but after reading the book I already know the answers.

It really is exceptional and would recommend to anyone not just to people trying to lose weight or cure their diabetes.

The narrator is also absolutely superb. This is how I would imagine Dr Fung reading it himself but possible better as it is minus the "right" after nearly every sentence. Just a small critique after Listening to lots of Dr Fung podcasts and YouTube postings.

All round 5 stars and intend on listening to this repeatedly until the belly fat has gone!!

Best read if you’re looking for weight loss.

Finally someone who knows what he’s talking about, instead of trying to sell me something.

Also very well read.

Monotonous, repetitive, hard work

I'm sure if I could bear to listen to another 7 hours of this book I might glean some useful information, but the problem is the repetitive nature of the writing, teamed with the monotonous voice of the narrator. Cut to the chase! Don't take several hours to make just one point.

Can be a bit scientific, but overall a good listen

Jason has some great observations about our eating habits and how they get bad. Ultimately he recommends fasting, having tried it I have to say he is correct - but trust what your body tells you.

Superb content, excellent narration

This book is brilliant, it offers all the scientific backup and research studies that you would expect if you’re asked to buy into a certain view and is described in an easy to understand format.
I’m a Personal Trainer and it has helped to reinforce my understanding of how the body processes food. It gives a well rounded holistic view and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Great book could be better

Main points done well, side points he wants to make could have been more thorough. That's just me though. The book would have gone on too long if he went to far into detail about the extra points.

Bit too heavy on detail

Almost all of this book is dedicated to telling you why you are fat and only the final couple of chapters tell you what to do about it. I’m a fan of Dr Fung but most of what you will learn here you can find on YouTube.

Excellent Book

The best book on obesity ever. Clear and concise and scientific. Makes so much sense. I think the insulin story is the best part. Only trouble is that 70% of insulin secretion is genetically determined and only 30% is under our control :-( Would be nice to be able to access the forward by Tim Noakes and the tables on fasting which are inaccessible on the audio book.

Mind Blowing

The information in this book is mind blowing. As a physician, I am always looking for credible information to help my patients. Citing good-quality scientific research, Dr Fung dismantles the misinformation with which we have been brainwashed since the 70's. Some of the shocking truths: If you are not hungry, don't eat. Breakfast is not necessarily the most important meal of the day, especially if you are not hungry. Snacking and grazing are huge contributors to the obesity crisis. It is not only what we eat, but WHEN we eat, that matters. Our diet of added sugars, simple starches, and modified fats is killing us, and one of the main drivers in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and the resulting health crisis.

The information in this book is quite dense. But for someone like me who really needs to hear the rigorous scientific study to prove benefit, I appreciated all the research that he cites, as well as his interpretation of it, and the applications to our health. Laying that foundation made it easier for me to step back from the Canada Food Guide and all the well-intentioned, but misguided, advice we have been following for the last 40 years.

My one complaint with the book was the narrator. He did a good job overall, but mispronounces several scientific terms. I initially didn't like his voice, but got used to is as I listened. And very quickly I was so riveted by the information being presented, I was no longer bothered by my quibbles with the narration.
