He was once called Orphan X.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from a children's home, raised and trained as part of a secret government initiative. But he broke with the programme, choosing instead to vanish off grid and use his formidable skill set to help those unable to protect themselves. One day, though, Evan's luck ran out . . .Ambushed, drugged, and spirited away, Evan wakes up in a locked room with no idea where he is. As he tries to piece together what's happened, testing his gilded prison and its highly trained guards for weaknesses, he receives a desperate call for help. With time running out, he will need to out-think, out-manoeuvre, and out-fight an opponent the likes of whom he's never encountered.

“An even more intense and harrowing thriller. The pace that never lets up.” DAILY MAIL.

I'm exhausted - not only is Evan's traumatic life keeping me constantly on the edge of my seat but I also have to keep listening until it's finished which means bed is going to be in the morning not at night!

A gruelling tale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It's a thriller in the Jack Reacher / Jason Bourne style, it's just written really well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Evan is clearly the reason you return for more, however the supporting cast of villains and acquaintances are well fleshed out. Orphan V feels like she is going to bring more to the party as the series progresses.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

I like the sense of drama he brings, it's a bit slow going sometimes but his Jack and Evan are good. I think my favourite bit of his narration is when Evan answers the phone 'Do you need my help...'

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

It's violent rather than emotional.

Any additional comments?

Best thriller I've read for years (after Orphan X).

Great Follow Up

Great thriller with a genuinely interesting and engaging protagonist and supporting cast.Knowingly written, several Deus Ex Machina moments are acknowledged within the story. Very well performed- characters are easy to tell apart without sounding false or strained.

Best of its type

Evan Smoak is a great character, wasn't sure he was going to get out of this adventure alive. Great depth of characters. The dreadful Renee to name but one. Spent the whole weekend listening. Great for diet as kept going out for walks with headset!
