About this listen

Inspired by two true stories, this novel set in 1962 imagines the events of James Meredith’s enrolling to integrate Ole Miss with the famous motel in Colorado featured in The New Yorker's “The Voyeur’s Motel”.

Temple Silver runs the Normal Motel, where the bar serves as the local hangout for the good ol’ townspeople in Oxhope who want to maintain their separate peace. But tensions rise with James’s arrival as the first Black student to enroll in the local university. When the unofficial leader of the locals is found dead in a Normal room on New Year’s Eve, and Temple is seen around town with James, the ensuing investigations lead to paths—and voyeurs’ motel walkways—unexpected.

Part romance and part howcatchem, The Normal Motel is also a story about a pivotal time and place and how it began to change despite its initial refusal to do so.
