About this listen

In the city where he lost everything, he'll stop at nothing to learn the truth.

Former NYPD detective Thomas Austin has spent three long years haunted by his wife Fiona's unsolved murder.

Three years searching for answers.

Three years finding little.

Until one lead changes everything.

Back in New York City, Austin picks up the scent of a far-reaching conspiracy involving rogue elements of the FBI, the NYPD, and ruthless Southeast Asian and Columbian drug cartels. Each new clue paints a more sinister picture, suggesting Fiona was caught in something bigger than Austin ever imagined. Something powerful enough to silence her forever.

To get justice, Austin must plunge deeper into the corrupt underworld where she spent her final days. A world where the truth comes at a deadly price.

A price Austin may not be willing to pay.

Can Austin overcome the nightmares haunting Brooklyn's Manhattan Beach? And if he finally learns the truth, will it bring him the peace he's been yearning for, or shatter everything he thought he knew about himself, his city, and the woman he still loves.

Book 7 of this increasingly absorbing story series featuring Thomas Austin, a recently widowed ex detective from the NYPD who left his job and moved away from the City to run a bait shop and cafe out in the sticks following his wife's unsolved murder. With his excellent skill for detection and with a taste affliction which mirrors his emotions, he takes on the role consultant when the local rural police find themselves unable to cope
But always there is the memory of the death of his beloved wife haunting him.

Book 7 reaches the conclusion of the story arc and is definitely improved by staring at the beginning with Book one, becoming familiar with the characters and rather unusual - cool and steady but dramatic - writing of these unusual mystery thrillers.
This is one to look out for into the future. Excellently performed by narrator Joe Hempel, this well written thriller was intriguing from the opening paragraphs to the very end.
Recommended.

Book 7 in this series and this was the first one that I lost interest in, part way through reading. I couldnt wait to finish it and not in a good way :( Too technical and too political for me. Also I was quite asounded by the lead characters apparent disregard for the safety of people he brought into his own personal search. There could have been so many deaths on his conscience. I will carry on with this series as I love the story (mainly!) and love the narrator. Just disappointed in this one.

Disappointed
