Summary

Relentless, gritty and full of unexpected twists, The Night Manager is John le Carré's 14th novel, and it is every bit as enthralling as his earlier works, like the best-selling The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The night manager is Jonathan, a veteran of clandestine operations. In flight from a failed marriage and his own past, he has taken refuge in the luxury hotel trade. Yet he finds no escape from his demons. Driven by a desire for atonement and by an inherited patriotism, Jonathan allows himself to be recruited as a British secret agent with a mission to expose the murderer of the woman he himself betrayed. His odyssey takes him across Britain and Canada to the Caribbean and the jungles of Panama. But there are more treacherous jungles still in Whitehall and Washington.

A classic Le Carré

As usual from Le Carré a well paced thriller, drawing the eader into the psychological And intellectual aspects of the plot, it's a contempory account of political and criminal intrigue, the lines between good and bad, political manouverings and the expediency of the hero caught up in all of this is a common theme in Le Carrés books, but I think it is well done here. Definitely worth a listen. Great narration as well, always crucial to the enjoyment of a good listen!

Not a patch on Smiley.

It’s fine but I bought it having loved the earlier le Carre work read by Jayston. This just never really felt real for me nor did it have the intricate field craft of the Cold War novels. It’s does have a good start and the finale is decent but the bulk of it feels fairly slow and I pretty much gave up half way through and put it on the shelf for a month.

Disappointing

I remember this being on tv and I thought it was quite good. But the books are always better; right ?! Unfortunately not in this case. It felt like Le Carre was self indulgently showing his knowledge of spy trade craft and Whitehall politics. Then it seemed to come to a very abrupt ending. Blink and you’ve missed the salient points. A little disappointing.

Loved it!

Very good storyline - although had to listen to bits more than once to make sure I'd got it right! Apparently a different ending to that of the TV series which I didn't see. I recommend this.

Brilliant reading, great sound quality

Great yarn, preferred the TV drama I have say... Bit disappointed with some of the story line having watched BBC version which is for once better... The end feels rushed and could have been better. But enjoy none the less

One of the best narrations ever for a book

Absolutely loved listening to The Night Manager. Having only seen the TV series I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It is a little different in places to the TV series but I think I enjoyed the book more. The narrator is first rate, he really makes you feel like you are there and the characters are completely believable. Highly recommended.
