Summary

When a murder suspect broke her back across a brick wall, Alisha Barba's dreams of being a detective were shattered. Now on her feet again, but with her career and private life in limbo, she receives a message from an old school friend, Cate Beaumont, who is eight months pregnant and in trouble.

On the night they arrange to meet, Cate is mown down by a car that kills her husband instantly. As paramedics fight to save her life, they uncover the first in a series of haunting and elaborate deceptions. They trigger a dangerous quest and as Alisha and her old boss, Detective Inspector Vincent Ruiz, travel deeper into a world of sex-trafficking, slavery, and exploitation, they must confront their own prejudices - and will come to question the very laws they have sworn to uphold.

Another brilliant book by Michael Robotham.

A really good story with lots of tension, brilliant characters and well narrated by Deni Francis who is new to me.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this, as with all of MR'S books I was drawn in emotionally

Great story and a great performance from the reader

I enjoyed this Audible book. Good story, content and characters. Whilst not Robothams best story it was good in that it wasn’t formula.
The lead character was flawed but that made her likeable.
Deni Francis the reader had the perfect and compelling voice for the book.

Another fabulous treat from Michael Robotham!

I couldn't stop listening to this with it's twists & turns. it was read beautifully with calmness, tension, all emotions being highlighted superbly.

It doesn't end how you would expect it to which is typical Robotham. As always, from start to finish it was enthralling!

Great story line but a little….

….strange. It’s odd, but when she is telling the story, it’s as though it’s TV ‘audio description’ e.g “she walks to the window and looks out” instead of she walked to the window and looked out”. Also, some of the continuity between scenes was a little odd. A bit strange I thought but I stuck with it and enjoyed the story.

OK spin-off

I usually shy away from 'ABRIDGED', but I liked previous O'Loughlin/Ruiz story-lines so gave this a go.
It focuses on Ali Barba, who came to our attention in the Wreckage (I think), Ruiz pops up and goes off like a bull in a china shop, but O'Loughlin is absent.
The plot is good, it spins around and covers some of the characters history as well as staying grounded in the 'present', the end is predictable, but not entirely...

The suspense was just right

I really enjoyed listening the narrator was great the story gripping, knowing that this is a reality quiet thought provoking.

Didn't realise it was an abridged version !

Really disappointed it was abridged.
Some of the narrators accents were a bit dodgy/same.
Really enjoyed the story just wish it was the full thing!

Don’t bother

I have listened to many of MR’s audio books. This was so disappointing. The narration was poor - not able to convey tension or mystery - just quite flat. I felt like chunks of the story was missing. Don’t waste a credit or money.

Very disappointing

I am a huge Michael Robotham fan and when I read that Ruiz was in this I couldn't wait. What a let down. Awful Narration diabolical and Ruiz didn't come through at all. Awful weak story. I can't believe it's a Michael Robotham. Don't waste your money
