Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective genius, Sherlock Holmes, came to NBC radio in 1930 starring Richard Gordon. By 1939, Basil Rathbone was heard as Holmes with Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. The duo was simultaneously starring in a popular series of Sherlock Holmes features for Fox and later for Universal. By the end of the feature run in the mid-1940s, Rathbone was eager to separate himself from the radio show to avoid being typecast and decided to move on. Tom Conway took over with Nigel Bruce continuing as Watson (in this pairing Nigel Bruce received top billing). Tom Conway and Nigel Bruce were replaced in 1947 by John Stanley and Alfred Shirley. Others to portray Holmes and Watson over the radio run were George Shelton and Ian Martin, and Ben Wright and Eric Snowden. In 1955, NBC signed heavyweights Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson to star as Holmes and Watson, but with radio fast giving way to television, it only lasted one season. You’ll hear Basil Rathbone, Tom Conway, John Stanley, and Sir Ralph Richardson (Holmes); and Nigel Bruce, Alfred Shirley, and Sir John Gielgud (Watson) in these 16 episodes.

The Great Sherlock Holmes
Ridiculous loud organ noise at the beginning, middle and end drives one mad along with the advertisements for wine, ruining the whole thing. Can become unbearable.

Enjoyed the original recordings
I enjoyed hearing Basil Rathbone as Holmes as I’ve not heard his version before. Good recording!

Very variable
The quality is very valuable in these sixteen episodes, drawn from different series of Holmes adventures. In terms of the stories, those directly adapted from Conan Doyle’s stories are naturally better than those written newly for the radio. Even so, the quality of the adaptation varies; the version of A Case of Identity here is one of the poorer versions of that story. The new stories written for the series are similarly variable. Some are adequate, some are really very poor indeed. Excepting the two final episodes, the quality declines noticeably once neither Rathbone or Bruce are involved. It does not help that quite a large chunk of the episodes’ time is devoted to puerile advertising. Unexpectedly, this also gets worse in the later episodes. The final two episodes, though, are in an entirely different class. These, “Dr. Watson meets Sherlock Holmes” (based largely on “Charles Augustus Milverton”) and “The Case of the Blue Carbuncle” (the details also list “The Empty House” but that is not included), star Sir John Gielgud as Sherlock Holmes and Sir Ralph Richardson as Watson. The adaptations are well done and the performances excellent. The music used is also superior to the cheesy organ chords which get hammered out in the earlier episodes. Unless you are a completist, I would recommend ignoring this set and instead getting the complete run of the Gielgud-Richardson series, which deserves at least four stars; these two episodes added an extra star to this collection.

It doesn't just star Rathbone and Bruce.
I thought it would be the first radio adventures with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. It isn't but the stars of the later episodes are Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud, two of the World's best radio actors.
The ads can be tedious but Watson sometimes complains about Mister Bartel's obsession with talking about wine. The later ads for Clipper Craft suits are not so interesting even for me, and I wear suits and ties even when I shop in Lidl, but I like to hear about the food our ancestors ate, what they drank, and what they wore

awful americanization, stay clear
the short stories are fairly well written with nice little plots, albeit not even close to the intriguing originals from the hand of Conan Doyle.
the narration is awful and the dramatization is simply bad and muddled , just not worth 8 hours of my time.
