Introducing Richard Armitage, our star narrator

Richard is well-known for his array of film, television and theatre work, including The Hobbit, Spooks and The Crucible. His trademark baritone voice has earned him recognition, too, through his performance on many notable audiobooks as well as in TV and radio show narration. This experience shines through in Armitage's gripping performance of the Jackman and Evans series where he plays host to a plethora of characters.

And Joy Ellis, the book's author

Joy Ellis started her career as a flower seller in Mayfair in the 1960s, before going on to open her own florist in Surrey. When the recession hit, Joy had a career change and became a bookseller, and attended a writing course in Greece where she was mentored by Sue Townsend. She now lives in the Fens with her partner Jacqueline, where the flatlands and marshes provide inspiration for her eerie plotlines.

Summary

Crimebusting duo DI Jackman and DS Evans are back solving another crime.

Twenty years ago: a farmer and his wife are cut to pieces by a ruthless serial killer.

Now: a woman is viciously stabbed to death in the upmarket kitchen of her beautiful house on the edge of the marshes.

Then a man called Daniel Kinder walks into Saltern police station and confesses to the murder.

But DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans of the Fenland Constabulary soon discover that there is a lot more to Daniel than meets the eye. He has no memory of the first five years of his life and has a rather unusual obsession with his mother...

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you gripped until the shocking ending.

Not as bad as the reviews say

The narration can be a bit monotoned at times but it's not too off-putting and there is one small bit where a line is repeated but again nothing too horrendous.

Good story with good twists. I didn't work out who the killer was until nearer the end of the book so either the previous reviewers who say they worked it out straight away are either seasoned crime readers or I'm not too bright 🤷‍♀️

Great Read

I thoroughly enjoyed this story..although I gathered the main suspect would not end up being the actual murderer it was a great story line.

If I could give Richard Armitage 10 stars I would

A good storyline which has pace all the way through and constantly made me try to second guess who the perpetrator is. At one point i did metaphorically sit back in my chair and light a cigar thinking i had worked it out but not the case!!!!
Richard Armitage is a good performer and that's obvious when you see him on screen, but i never for a second imagined how good he would be when narrating this book. 10 stars for his performance.

Ooo, you can’t put it down!

An exciting fast paced book with so many turns you can’t figure out which possible shady person actually killed anyone! I enjoy a good yarn without the distraction of deep character development, and I feel it suited my tastes very well.

I also don’t like the popular thing with modern day detective fiction that they have to have a troubled and unhappy home life. Let’s just have a team of hard working detectives who want to do their job well, and all function together fairly well as a team - thank you Joy Ellis!

I’m sorry Richard Armitage as I think you’re a great actor, but the narration wasn’t my favourite. Could do with a few pauses or change in tone to denote change of location of the action, change from speech to thought etc. Sometimes a little hard to follow, and I pressed my ‘back 30 sec’ function a few times.

Buy it, it’s a great book, and thankfully it’s part of a series so more of the same please!

Intriguing,good treadmillbook

Narrator good, kept same voices for characters as in first book, easy on the ear.
Story interesting but a little predictable, did keep me hooked. Only listened to it while on treadmill and found this book was an encouragement to walk 😂, even for longer periods just to finish the book.
Will continue to try this author enjoyable listen,
