This is a lighthearted book with a serious purpose: to question the assumptions behind the dogma and sheer hype that the dominant school of neoliberal economists-the apostles of the freemarket-have spun since the Age of Reagan.

Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

Story
Misogyny is a hot topic, yet it's often misunderstood. What is misogyny, exactly? Who deserves to be called a misogynist? How does misogyny contrast with sexism, and why is it prone to persist - or increase - even when sexist gender roles are waning? This book is an exploration of misogyny in public life and politics by the moral philosopher Kate Manne. It argues that misogyny should not be understood primarily in terms of the hatred or hostility some men feel toward all or most women. Rather, it's primarily about controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the "bad" women.

Story
For a long time, when people asked Dr. Meera Shah what she did, she would tell them she was a doctor and leave it at that. "I'm an abortion provider," she will now say. And an interesting thing started to happen each time she met someone new. One by one, people would confide that in fact they'd had an abortion themselves. And the refrain was often the same: You're the only one I've told. This book collects those stories as they've been told to Shah to humanize abortion and to combat myths that persist in the discourse that surrounds it.

The right to:
Spend your own money. Go to school. Earn an income. Access contraceptives. Work outside the home. Walk outside the home. Choose whom to marry. Get a loan. Start a business. Own property. Divorce a husband. See a doctor. Drive a car.
All of these rights are denied to women in some parts of the world.
A Sunday Times best-selling debut from Melinda Gates, a timely and necessary call to action for women's empowerment.
'How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings - and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.'
In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares the stories of the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world and the lessons she’s learned from them. As she writes in the introduction, 'That is why I had to write this book - to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.'
Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention - from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world - and ourselves.
When we lift others up, they lift us up, too. When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.
Critic reviews
"When you lift up women, you lift up everybody - families, communities, entire countries...In her book, Melinda tells the stories of the inspiring people she's met through her work all over the world, digs into the data, and powerfully illustrates issues that need our attention...I've called Melinda an impatient optimist and that's what she delivers here - the urgency to tackle these problems and the unwavering belief that solving them is indeed possible." (Barack Obama)
"It is a call for unity, inclusion and connection. We need this message more than ever." (Malala Yousafzai)
"The Moment of Lift is an urgent call to courage. It changed how I think about myself, my family, my work, and what's possible in the world. Melinda weaves together vulnerable, brave storytelling and compelling data to make this one of those rare books you carry in your heart and mind long after the last page." (Brené Brown, PdD, author of New York Times best seller Dare to Lead)

What a great listen!
I really enjoyed this listen. If you start off listening, the first few chapters do make you think that the title is somewhat misleading be a use the stories will inevitably make you cry but the the narration and story are great and I’ll definitely recommend and reference the book when I talk about othering and inclusion. I really appreciated as well that Melinda has done the narration herself. I find it makes for a much better audible.

Empowering
The Moment of Lift delves into heartbreaking subjects such as child brides, female genital cutting, and "basic" issues that, in a just world also would have been resolved long ago, easy access to contraception. Interestingly there is also a chapter about women and agriculture you will find to be important. Though dark in the sense that the book is precise in pointing to grave problems, the emphasis is on "the lift", the breakthrough moments and aha-experiences that point to a possible, better, more equal future. By retelling her own journey Melinda includes the perspective of privileged women, revealing our blind spots and sometimes slow awakening to all the issues of gender justice.
Gates is very well worded. One reason for her clarity is the many women she has met, spoken with and sometimes shared a roof with. She cites their life-experiences and what she has learned from them. Want to meet courageous women in circumstances different from your own? Read this book. Solidarity with you all, sisters.

Eye Opening!
Wow. What a great book it is! Came at a time when I've been witnessing how amazing my wife/mother of our new born is. Not that I've never respected women, but the amount of love, dedication she has put into raising our beloved son is second to none, and makes me honor women deeply. Reading this book and seeing my wife take care of our son makes me realise how much women aren't appreciated enough. This book has ignited in me the hunger and the desire to stand up for women and everyone marginalized. Thanks to my wife and Melinda for opening my eyes.
