About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

What does it mean to be mixed race in today's society?

In this powerful book, Natalie and Naomi Evans, founders of anti-racist advocacy and platform Everyday Racism, explore the complexities of mixed-race identities - from the discrimination endured by the 1.2 million mixed people in Britain and millions more elsewhere, to the privileges it can afford. Sharing their own personal experiences of growing up in Britain to illuminate the nuances of racial identity, the book also weaves in:

  • Interviews with people from mixed backgrounds and in mixed relationships
  • Research to dispel common myths and stereotypes
  • Practical advice for mixed-race families and friendships

The Mixed-Race Experience will help you to recognise and confront the racism within your own family and communities, helping us all to deepen our intersectional awareness and commitment to allyship.

Thought-provoking, sensitive and challenging, The Mixed Race Experience is a deeply moving look at identity and belonging.

I loved this book. It’s the first time I’ve read something that I can fully relate to and has forced me to open up conversations with family and friends. The different stories from various contributors was a lovely touch too. Thoroughly recommend.

Raw and thought provoking

Everytime I read or listen to experiences of other mixed people who grew up in the UK, it soothes my childhood self and my childhood traumas.
This is an easy digestable book for anyone trying to understand what it's like to be mixed, and the countless everyday racism that is embedded in UK culture.
It Unfortunatley high lights the UK education systems lack of culture education (at the time).

To All mixed heritage people

I confess I have been waiting for this book ever since I scrolled across news of its release. I myself identify as mixed race and I feel there has always been a need for a book like this.

To sum up in a few sentences, this book is exactly what its’ title suggests. Listening to the collected thoughts, testimonies and above all, feelings of individuals, who by their nature reject the commonplace binary of race was an incredibly positive experience for me.

I’d recommend this firstly to anyone who identifies as I do, but also, as the authors suggest, anyone who shares their orbit with us. It’s a necessary discussion to be had and one that has left me both affirmed and seen. I thank the authors for this one :).

A welcome echo chamber to my own thoughts

This book is a must read! It’s challenging and insightful and the way Natalie and Naomi go through the book explaining challenging subjects interwoven with their own stories is so helpful to grapple with learning about this area and what they have experienced growing up! They explain personal matters and break them down for better understanding! It is approachable for learning and doing better in this area which is brilliant! The interviews bring context and experience to life so the book feels real and not just a series of chapters to read and take in. Thank you to those who have shared. I thought the reflections chapter was a beautiful way to end! I listened to the book on audible and having Natalie and Naomi reading the book made it come to life and felt personable.
Incredible work Natalie and Naomi - thank you for this book and sharing experiences from you life!

“Honest conversations about the construction of race and stark implications that racial identities have on our life are crucial…It's important that we continue to expand our knowledge and understanding of this in order to subvert the current trap we fall into, which is to place so much emphasis on race as a fixed identity.”

‘The Mixed Race Experience’ is a thoughtful exploration of the complexities of navigating race, heritage and identity as someone identifying as mixed race or being of mixed heritage.

Natalie and Naomi remind us that the mixed race identity “is not a monolith”, and through reflecting on their own experiences alongside engaging in conversations with others, have gone beyond the binary of ‘black and white’ to more accurately represent the differences in the experiences of those of mixed heritage.

I have been challenged and moved by the vulnerability displayed by the authors and those interviewed, and am still thoughtful after reading this book.

Challenging, relevant and thought provoking.
