Story
All Beth has to do is drive her son to his Under-14s away match, watch him play, and bring him home. Just because she knows that her former best friend lives near the football ground, that doesn't mean she has to drive past her house and try to catch a glimpse of her. Why would Beth do that, and risk dredging up painful memories? She hasn't seen Flora Braid for 12 years. But she can't resist. She parks outside Flora's house and watches from across the road as Flora and her children, Thomas and Emily, step out of the car. Except....

Story
Outside a remote manor house in an idyllic wood, a baby girl is found. The Harrington family takes her in, and disbelief quickly turns to joy. They're grieving a terrible tragedy of their own, and the beautiful baby fills them with hope, lighting up the house's dark, dusty corners. Desperate not to lose her to the authorities, they keep her secret, suspended in a blissful summer world where normal rules of behaviour - and the law - don't seem to apply. But within days a body will lie dead in the grounds. And their dreams of a perfect family will shatter like glass.

I nearly threw the letter about the inheritance away with the recycling. Late for work, worrying about how I would afford new school shoes for Kate, I just assumed it was a mistake. But perhaps moving to a new home in a quiet seaside town would be the fresh start we both need. Away from the school bullies making Kate’s life a misery, and out of the clutches of my dangerous ex.

Story
A series of unsolved murders with one thing in common: each of the deaths bears an eerie resemblance to the crimes depicted in classic mystery novels. The deaths lead FBI Agent Gwen Mulvey to mystery bookshop Old Devils. Owner Malcolm Kershaw had once posted online an article titled 'My Eight Favourite Murders,' and there seems to be a deadly link between the deaths and his list - which includes Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders, Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train and Donna Tartt's The Secret History.

Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Elijah has lived in the Memory Wood for as long as he can remember. It’s the only home he’s ever known.
Elissa has only just arrived. And she’ll do everything she can to escape.
When Elijah stumbles across 13-year-old Elissa, in the woods where her abductor is hiding her, he refuses to alert the police. Because in his 12 years, Elijah has never had a proper friend. And he doesn’t want Elissa to leave.
Not only that, Elijah knows how this can end. After all, Elissa isn’t the first girl he’s found inside the Memory Wood.
As her abductor’s behaviour grows more erratic, Elissa realises that outwitting strange, lonely Elijah is her only hope of survival. Their cat-and-mouse game of deception and betrayal will determine both their fates and whether either of them will ever leave the Memory Wood.
Critic reviews
"An intense, atmospheric, and truly original thriller." (Shari Lapena, author of The Couple Next Door)

narration is what saved this
This was… ok. I think maybe I am falling out of love with the genre in general as I think a few year ago I would have loved this. The plot seems simple and generic at first glance. Girl is kidnapped and kept captive. So far so…. meh. The twist comes with Elijah, a 12 year old boy who finds her and wants to keep her as a friend so won’t get help for her. There’s some pretty good twists and reveals and I liked the three narrators (one of them extremely unreliable!). However I felt it lacked pace and dragged on somewhat. A fairly entertaining read though…might be good for by the pool. Obe positive was that I really enjoyed the narration. Trigger warning for pregnancy loss and extreme violence.

Fantastic from start to finish!
I loved it from the first page, those that read it did an excellent job of bringing the characters to life believable, story was enticing and exciting to the last and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. I listened to it whilst decorating and I never grew bored. If you like a bit of drama, tension and ‘oh my god what’s going to happen next?’ This is the one for you.
