Story
Captain Maximus Harcourt, the unconventional tenth Duke of Alderidge, can deal with tropical storms, raging seas, and the fiercest of pirates. But he's returned home from his latest voyage to find a naked earl - quite inconveniently deceased - tied to his missing sister's bed. And he has only one place to turn. Now he's at the mercy of the captivating Miss Ivory Moore of Chegarre & Associates, known throughout London for smoothing over the most dire of scandals.
Summary
Seventeen-year-old spirit medium Emily Chambers has a problem. Actually, she has several. As if seeing dead people isn't a big enough social disadvantage, she also has to contend with an escaped demon and a handsome ghost with a secret past. And then there's the question of her parentage. Being born an entire year after her father's death (yes, a year) and without the pale skin of other respectable English ladies, Emily is as much a mystery as the dead boy assigned to her.
Jacob Beaufort's spirit has been unable to cross over since his death. It might have something to do with the fact he was murdered. Or it might not. All he knows is he has been assigned by the Otherworld's administrators to a girl named Emily. A girl who can see and touch him. A girl who released a shape-shifting demon into the mortal realm. Together they must send the demon back before it wreaks havoc on London. It should be a simple assignment, but they soon learn there's nothing simple when a live girl and a dead boy fall in love.

Terrible Narration Spoils a Good Story
I love C J Archer stories but the awful narration really lets this story down. It's not the worst I've heard, but it's pretty bad and conveys the characters poorly. I suspect this story is much better than it sounds on this audio. What a disappointment

Ended, Just Over, is Resolution Gone?
Would you try another book from C. J. Archer and/or Gemma Dawson?
Nope, done. I was never engaged with the characters and the ending, left dangling, was poorly executed
Would you ever listen to anything by C. J. Archer again?
No. The obvious, "sell the sequel," was incredibly poorly written. In a series, each book should be a chapter in a larger book. This was falling in love with a ghost with no resolution, no real intrigue and while many writers do write longer books that are broken into sequels, each book should stand on it's own as well. This book did not.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Her accent was good, she did a credible job with a badly written book.
What character would you cut from The Medium?
All of them.
Any additional comments?
I love books and books with sequels, that make me want more. For example, Madeleine L'Engle's books are part of a whole, but each book has a clear resolution and almost demands the reader learn more. This book, not so much. I am sure if the entirety of the story were presented I might have found it bearable, but as it is? I wish I could return it. I felt my money was taken for a quarter of a book. The characters interesting, but why was the sister the way she was? No exploration of the secondary characters, just all main character stuff. No understanding, or care from the main character about whether her skills affected anyone on the other side, or this one. No moments of humor. It felt like she was trying, but she does not write that way. I was really unhappy.

The reviews don't do it justice
I was skeptical about this book due to the reviews but gave it a chance anyways. I'm so happy I did, I loved the story and the characters. The ending is designed to be a cliffhanger so you'll want to read the next book. I for one plan to start it immediately and can't wait to see what happens.

Okay, but a bit lackluster
Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Emily Chambers trilogy. I borrowed this audiobook through Audible Escapes.
Story (3/5): This is a pretty typical supernatural historical fantasy. It’s set in London and ghosts and demons are real. I would have liked to learn more about the demons and ghosts and how that all works; but the ghosts we actually get to read about are few and far between and the demon we only see briefly. I did enjoy the mystery behind who enabled the summoning of a shapeshifting demon.
Characters (3/5): The characters all felt a bit vanilla to me, but Jacob and Emily do have good chemistry together. While Emily does occasionally show some pluck, she really lets her sister dominate her most of the time.
Setting (3/5): There wasn’t a lot of work done in world-building here. The setting is pretty typical historical Victorian with some small supernatural elements added.
Writing Style (3/5): The whole thing felt a bit limp and lackluster to me. I felt the same way about Archer’s Glass and Steele series, but decided to give her another chance since this was free to borrow though Audible Escapes. Archer is almost an author I like but I just don’t quite engage with her style.
Summary (3/5): This was an okay book but didn’t really excel at anything. Everything was okay but nothing really grabbed me. I felt the same way about Archer’s Glass and Steele series. I don’t plan on continuing the series.

Love Story not a Ghost Story.
This book started out with such a great foundation, the sisters were engaging, Jacob interesting and mysterious, but then about half way through it went for 'demon' chasing to sappy love story without the 'love' part. It was like listening to two separate books in one sitting. I didn't hate it, but I don't care about what happens next, especially after such a anti-climatic ending. Nothing is resolved, not entirely, but instead of leaving you wanting for more, it simply leaves you annoyed.

an imaginative story
I like books where the story line isn't obvious, where I can't guess what's going to happen next or where theres several different outcomes. This story did that. I rated the performance so low because I found myself critiquing the narration instead of following the story. I just barely could stand Jacob's voice. To me it was too whiney and he just sounded like a crybaby. I had to read those parts myself to see if it was the narrator or writers doing. I found the narration too posh and too feminine for the male character Jacob. Just my opinion. But a very captivating story....
