Summary

Kit has been projecting into other species for seven years. Longer than anyone else at ShenCorp. Longer than any of the scientists thought possible. But lately she has the feeling that when she jumps, she isn't alone....

Since she was 12, Kit has been a phenomenaut, her consciousness projected into the bodies of lab-grown animals for the purpose of research. Kit experiences a multitude of other lives - fighting and fleeing, predator and prey - always hoping, but never quite believing, that her work will help humans better understand the other species living alongside them.

But after a jump as an urban fox ends in disaster, Kit begins to suspect that those she has trusted for her entire working life may be out to cause her harm. And as she delves deeper into the events of that night, her world begins to shift in ways she had never thought possible.

Critic reviews

"A work of intelligent, thought-provoking, spine-chilling science fiction that will delight and terrify in equal measure. Exciting, horrifying and compelling." (Jack Wolf, author of The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones)

Excellent

Great story with pitch-perfect narration. Very enjoyable. Best I've heard for a long time. The narrative is very clear and draws you in. Highly recommended.

Confusing

I did enjoy this book but found the 'jumping' around between chapters quite confusing, otherwise a good read

Not for me

I really liked the idea of this book. I enjoy science fiction and was intrigued by the environmental twist. I'm afraid it just didn't work for me, though. The concept had something of WestWorld to it, but the idea was poorly developed with unlikeable protagonists and intriguing sub plots were poorly developed if at all. The writing style was very disjointed. I have no problem with jumping backwards and forwards in time, but the jumps were too fragmented to maintain the storyline. The lead character was petulant and immature - part of this was clearly what the author was aiming for (without giving any spoilers), but this rapidly became a distraction as the characters behaviour became more and more bizarre. Others have mentioned that the ending was a bit flat and I'd concur. The last hour and a half or so led to many revelations (not unexpected despite the jerky style), and yet none were followed through. Instead we end up with a classic cop out boy-meets-girl-all-is-well-with-the-world. Could have been excellent. Instead just feels like a waste of 10 hours.

Awesome

I can't begin to imagine the amount of research that had to go into this book, and the wonderful imagination it sprang from! What an author. The narration only added to the pleasure gained from listening! I would normally listen to a book while doing housework etc, but I couldn't tear myself away from the iPad as I listened to this wonderful book!
