Summary

Gower Street, London, 1882: Sidney Grice, London's most famous personal detective, is expecting a visitor. He drains his fifth pot of morning tea, and glances outside, where a young, plain woman picks her way between the piles of horse-dung towards his front door. Sidney Grice shudders. For heaven's sake - she is wearing brown shoes. The Mangle Street Murders is for those who like their crime original, atmospheric, and very, very funny.

Critic reviews

"One of the most delightful and original new novels of the year, this is the first in a series that could well become a cult. Grice and Middleton promise to become a positive treat. Catch them now." ( Daily Mail)

Really entertaining story

Any additional comments?

A wonderful book which holds you enchanted from start to finish so you are sorry to leave that world when it's over. Very cleverly written and beautifully read, it satisfies the reader with a good murder mystery, but also slowly unravels the back story of the two main characters; especially March who is a mystery within a mystery. So far so excellent, but what really sets this book apart is the humour. The last books which made me laugh out loud this much were George MacDonald Fraser's 'Flashman' novels. Like them too the period details are enough to evoke the era without boring you and include amusingly snobbish touches such as brown shoes in town. There are the expected nods to Conan Doyle but this book stands strong on its own merit. Listen to it, but have a bottle of gin handy as it gives you a thirst for it; that and hot tea.

It was okay

The story is fairly simple with a storyline and characters that were easy to follow and imagine. The close where the actual events are revealed is a bit of an anticlimax but as a whole an easy listen. Nothing earth-shattering but didn't feel like I had wasted my purchase either.

A gripping beautifully read book

Really enjoyed this book. It was original and quirky and beautifully narrated. I would have given it 5 out of 5, but I wanted to know a bit more about some of the threads.

Brilliant tale, irritating chapters

What did you like most about The Mangle Street Murders?

An excellent plot and sub-plot, paying homage to the deerstalker (the Holmes genre of difficult and unsocialised detective having the world interpreted for him by an able assistant) without slipping into pastiche.

Any additional comments?

These are short chapters, and my listening was a little spoilt by the chapter headings. As the narrative headed to a satisfy conclusion, they got in the way.

Sherlock Holmes in disguise.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Mangle Street Murders to be better than the print version?

I have no idea,as I only listened to the audio version.

What did you like best about this story?

Loved the fact it was so different to my usual genre of serial killing crime, blood thirsty horror.

What does Emma Gregory bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She was extremely light and easy to listen to-if just a little bit too "English" at times. But this did not spoil the story at all.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really,it was just an enjoyable, easy listen.

Any additional comments?

I had been considering buying this for a while on the account I share with my son. Finally caved in when I purchased the Kindle version and noticed I could get Audible version cheap at same time.I am glad I did as it was an enjoyable listen-once I got used to Emma Gregory's very English voice.
Saying that,do not expect any genius in the writing here-or any intriguing plot, the story on the whole was pretty predictable.I guessed what was coming next at every turn. But don't let that put you off.If you are looking for a light hearted,Sherlock Holmes imitation that you can just relax to,this is fine for the purpose.
I have even purchased the second book in the series-and plan to buy the third-if and when it is available on Audible.
This would make a good listen for a long family car journey as it is easy to listen to,humorous (although I did not find it as funny as I thought it would be,by the blurb) and there are no sudden "fright" that would make the driver jump out of his skin and lose his/her grip on the wheel.
