Story
When Detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at Montreal's St. Hubert airfield, he does so without looking back. For Sime, the 850-mile journey ahead represents an opportunity to escape the bitter blend of loneliness and regret that has come to characterise his life in the city. Travelling as part of an eight-officer investigation team, Sime's destination lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Only two kilometres wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of around 130 inhabitants - the wealthiest of which has just been discovered murdered in his home.

Keeps you hanging right to the end
I have grown to admire and enjoy Peter May's work but this was the most fulfilling of all the books I have listened to so far. The grey chill of Brussels, the jostling of competitive reporters, the pressures of international politics and the concise descriptions of locations brought this story to life in my imagination.
Peter Forbes is an excellent reader of Peter May's stories. Sometimes, you even forget he is there!
Excellent.

Such a good read!
This book was worth the wait, Peter May has lost none of his touch to convey the emotions and machinations of his characters. At times I felt frustration and anger toward Bannerman, but all the while knowing that his actions completely fitted with man he was. I do hope that there will be other books continuing his story alongside that of his journalistic investigations.

Great duo - Peter May’s literary skills combined with Peter Forbes narration, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.
A revision of an earlier novel which is set in Europe rather than in Scotland but with the main character being Scottish. It’s an easy to listen to, good thriller. Highly recommended.

Last Peter May book I will read
Well it’s the end of the road for me and Peter May. I’ve read every book and I really think he should of stopped after Lewis Trilogy. This should definitely not have been resurrected. Peter Forbes unfortunately sounds like Enzo throughout this! The story is very lame. The main character has very few redeeming features and I just can’t agree that the glowing reviews here. Sorry Mr May the end of the line for me!! Pretty awful.

Disappointed
I'm sorry to say I'm completely at odds with previous reviewers.
This is a reissue of an early book and, for me, it really shows. I'm giving up at chapter 12 because I don't particularly like the characters and not much has happened although a fair amount has been telegraphed. The frequent changes of point-of-view are clunky and distracting. Occasionally there is a beautifully turned phrase that hints at the master author May will become but it is not enough to make me want to persevere.
The narration is as good as ever but the material just isn't up to it.
I've loved so many of Peter May's books and I'll still be looking forward to the next one despite my disappointment this time round.

Interesting rather than thrilling
The fact that this book was originally written in the 70s (I think it was 70s) in a time when the internet wasn't a thing and if you wanted to get information you needed to do actual leg work, was what drew me in to buying this.
It had been a long time since I read a thriller and the fact that this had assassinations, a journalist seeking the truth when the police were saying there was no case, and the mystery of a murderer seen only by an autistic child who didn't speak, intrigued me.
Sadly, the mystery was gone pretty much straight away as the assassin is a POV character. I also felt that things came a little too easy to Bannerman, the journalist. He's also not that likeable a guy and, despite that, women seen drawn to him. Just something about him rubbed me the wrong way. Not the greatest choice for a main character if you want your audience to get behind him.
I also don't feel, at any point, this could be classed as 'thrilling'. It was interesting, exciting (in places), but never thrilling. It's not the longest of books and, despite that, takes a slowburn approach to the story.
A story that leads to an ending that just left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. I'm making this sound far worse than it is. Its good, but its just not great. At no point did I particularly feel anything for the characters that had me routing for them. I also feel that it could have probably been condensed into a novella-length work and not really have lost anything.
I've seen people say this is a 'good starting point' for people who want to read Peter May's work. I can tell from this that he's a good writer, but I can also tell he is going to have a lot better stuff out there. Certainly wish I'd had perhaps tried something different as my starting point.
That being said, it wasn't a bad listen. The narrator was good and I felt his voices were different enough to give a clear image of the characters he was portraying. It was also only £1.99 as part of the Audible Daily Deal, so I can hardly complain too much.
