Summary

Even as a child Barbara was beautiful, but as her beauty grew so did the affliction which shadowed it. She was becoming deaf. Yet living in an almost silent world protected her from what could be a worse affliction - to know the truth of her own origins.

Barbara had another protector in Anna Brigmore, who knew that truth and was haunted by the thought it must one day be revealed to this girl she cherished like her own child. And among the surrounding hills and valleys of Northumberland, it was a long-relished scandal....

What a conclusion!

Didn't think it would have been possible to enjoy as the 1st one but as it got going and I got back into the characters that I loved from 'The Mallen Streak' I was hooked and hoped for a conclusion which would befit the series and it definitely doesn't disappoint! only my 2nd Catherine Cookson book and shall be seeking advice from my mum for the next installment!

Excellent narration

Not one of Catherine’s best but enjoyable nonetheless. Narrator is excellent. I’m hoping the next book in the series is as good as the first

The Mallen Story Continues

Book 2 of the Mallen trilogy sees the focus now move to the birth life and growing up to adulthood of a beautiful girl. Barbara Mallen, daughter of Barbara Farrington, spinster, raaped by her drunken uncle and who died shortly after birthing her daughter. Alongside her is her cousin Michael Radlett son of Constance Raddlett, sister of Barbara Farrington and aunt of Barbara Mallen who is also raising her son of similar age but in a very different way. Both of the children have secret fathers about whom they are totally ignorant; neither are told the truth until it is way too late and irreparable damage is done.

Set against them also is the backdrop of the Bensham family. Now owners of Highbanks Hall which is the former Mallen residence parents to 3 children whom Miss Brigmore the governess for the Farringtons is now as they grow up governess for the Benshams as well as the guardian to Barbara the daughter she never had. The Mallen Girl is another sweeping novel as only Catherine Cookson could write them. The tragedy that then happens when Barbara learns the truth about first Michaels true parentage and then her own gives everything a good story should have and even more.

The reader is better than book 1 except for the silly high voices given to Kate Besham and especially Barbara herself. they are truly annoying. They dont fit the characters either because Kate and Barbara are both strong willed women in their own right. Such voices would never be the case and are totally inappropriate. Get over that however and lose yourself by just immersing in the story and these 17 chapters just fly by. Love it and now ready for the final Mallen Litter.
