Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
A Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year
Updated with a new afterword by the author

'Douglas Murray fights the good fight for freedom of speech ... A truthful look at today's most divisive issues' Jordan B. Peterson

'[Murray’s] latest book is beyond brilliant and should be read, must be read, by everyone' Richard Dawkins

Are we living through the great derangement of our times?

In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

One of the few writers who dares to counter the prevailing view and question the dramatic changes in our society – from gender reassignment for children to the impact of transgender rights on women – Murray’s penetrating book, now published with a new afterword taking account of the book's reception and responding to the worldwide Black Lives Matter protests, clears a path of sanity through the fog of our modern predicament.

A breath of fresh air

I hope Douglas’ compassionate honestly allows people to start having the conversations they are having in private, in public.

Beautifully written. Well balanced.

Douglas Murray at his typically funny yet poignant best.

A source for those seeking to further their understanding of the counter-arguments (or at least balance) to the hard-line progressive attitudes of today.

Must read.

I enjoyed this more than my first mass murder

I chose that heading because not understanding this thesis and the messages contained will almost certainly result in murder, civil war and the destruction of Western civilization.

Brilliantly insightful, whilst being humourous and accessible, Murray 'deconstructs' (tee hee) the perils and problems of identity politics in the 21st century.

You'll get the joke when you listen to the book.

Bullseye

An excellent encapsulation of the bitter, tyrannical, nonsensical ideas that have infested our universities and are spreading out to the general public like a plague of locusts. Also, quite humorous in parts, Douglas has the perfect voice for this thriller

Discussing some of the issues of our time.

I really enjoyed this book, it isn't particularly heavy on statistics but gives accounts of some defining moments/figures in what Murray considers the unforgiving tyranny of identity politics.

The book culminates in an message that although politics are important, they are not a good source of meaning due to political goals being largely unsuccessful and often routed in grievence. Finding meaning in life should be more than a bitter cause and people need to learn (especially in politics) to forgive each other and take a more charitable view of their opponents, this Murray hopes will open up discourse and rev down the current political tribalism.

Serperb and important book

This is not only an important book, highlighting the madness of the modern left, it is also very well written, entertaining, and brilliantly narrated by the author.

Fantastic book. And in these times brave.

In todays toxic woke obsessed world, Douglas Murray has hit the nail on the head of how dangerous and destructive woke culture has become. An excellent read, well thought out, highly recommend to anyone not infected with the madness of Marxist wokeism.

Engaging and very well written.

A very important book, Douglas Murrays primary focus is to speak the uncomfortable truth.
