About this listen

Neve Connolly looks down at a murdered man.

She doesn't call the police.

‘You know, it’s funny,’ Detective Inspector Hitching said. ‘Whoever I see, they keep saying, talk to Neve Connolly, she’ll know. She’s the one people talk to, she’s the one people confide in.’

A trusted colleague and friend. A mother. A wife. Neve Connolly is all these things.

She has also made mistakes: some small, some unconsciously done, some large, some deliberate. She is only human, after all. But now one mistake is spiralling out of control, and Neve is bringing those around her into immense danger. She can’t tell the truth. So how far is she prepared to go to protect those she loves? And who does she really know?

And who can she trust?

A liar. A cheat. A threat.

Neve Connolly is all these things.

Could she be a murderer?

Critic reviews

“'The hook of The Lying Room is chilling: a woman discovers the dead body of a man she knows and doesn’t tell a soul...Nicci French remains one step ahead of us as we race to unpick Neve Connolly's deadly tangle. Expertly paced, psychologically sharp, thoroughly enjoyable." (Louise Candlish)

This is not a patch on their Freda Klein
Novels which I enjoyed very much. The heroine is a dippy career girl who doesn’t seem to do much work yet manages to support an equally dull husband who never works at all ,has three children and has time for an affair.
The breathy narrator is a bit irritating too.

Disappointing

Enjoyable story with a few twists. Narrator was ok, though did gabble quite a bit, and constantly sounded in a rush to get the story over with.

Interesting storyline

I am a huge fan of their earlier thrillers, so was looking forward to this book. However I didn't find it as gripping as some of their previous titles. Also, this may be a small thing but I'm the same age as Neve and I didn't have college friends called Bernice, Fletcher and Ronata, but nor do I whip up baba ganoush and shop in deli's.

it started well....

Story line was well maintained throughout. The protagonist is portrayed as a person many could relate to- keeping a family together, full time job, marriage becomes stale and taken for granted. The murder of her lover throws her life into turmoil. Several reviews commented on the speed of the narrator - so I reduced the speed on the app to 0.9 and it sounded great. All in all a good listen. Looking forward to the next Nicci French novel
