""This claustrophobic, horror-leaning tour de force is highly recommended for fans of Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation and Andy Weir’s The Martian."" -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

***

A thrilling, atmospheric debut with the intensive drive of The Martian and Gravity and the creeping dread of Annihilation, in which a caver on a foreign planet finds herself on a terrifying psychological and emotional journey for survival.

When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits, and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck—enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother—meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane.

Instead, she got Em.

Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition. Em knows all about Gyre’s falsified credentials, and has no qualms using them as a leash—and a lash. And Em has secrets, too . . .

As Gyre descends, little inconsistencies—missing supplies, unexpected changes in the route, and, worst of all, shifts in Em’s motivations—drive her out of her depths. Lost and disoriented, Gyre finds her sense of control giving way to paranoia and anger. On her own in this mysterious, deadly place, surrounded by darkness and the unknown, Gyre must overcome more than just the dangerous terrain and the Tunneler which calls underground its home if she wants to make it out alive—she must confront the ghosts in her own head.

But how come she can’t shake the feeling she’s being followed?

went in expecting a zombie thriller and got an impressive tale of survival impressive

not what I expected

really struggled with this. Many reasons but mainly it is the Author's premise that having an emotional meltdown every 5 minutes in response to your employer is acceptable for a profesional. The main character in this story has imposter syndrome and continually voices her self doubts - on and on and on!!! She decides to get into a power struggle with her employer who controls all of her life functions - and we are expected to believe this results in said employer having a crisis of conscience rather than firing her !! This could have had a great narrative but has the emotional maturity of a 12 year old. The narrator has a slightly annoying habit of raising her tone at the end of every sentence and continually says "didn't, wouldn't and couldn't... without any emphasis on the "d"-which got very grating. very disappointing waste of several hours of my life I will not get back

repetatively tedious

The story is good, does feel like it could have been cut down by a few chapters in places. Overall a good read the chacharacters are both a little bit unlikable despite the book really wanting you to invest in them. It isn't Vandemer or Weir but a good read nonetheless, I wouldn't class this as horror however if that's what you are mainly looking for, this is more of atmosphere thriller then horror.
The narrator did well in my opinion I enjoyed the way she read the book itself and distdistinguished between the characters.

Longwinded but a decent read

story felt very predictable, slow burning with little to no twists which were not obviously foreshadowed.

Very slow, pretty mundane plot

After an interesting first couple of hours and a fun premise this story deteriorates into a repetitive teen angst farce. It’s a shame as there was so much potential.

Dire teen angst story
